School Lunch Planning Made Easy with MOMables (Review & Giveaway)

Posted on July 5, 2014January 10, 2016 by Mandy

momables

When I was growing up, I felt super special when my mom packed a lunch for me.  Not that our school cafeteria didn’t serve great meals, but there was just something about my mom packing my lunch in my little Strawberry Shortcake lunchbox that made that part of the day so much better.  Naturally, when my own little guy started school I couldn’t wait to pack him lunches.  Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen that often because of his extreme pickiness in food and my sad lack of meal planning skills.

What’s For Lunch?

I really wanted to work on this lunch dilemma this summer, and then I received the opportunity to try MOMables, a school lunch planning service.  A service that plans meals and makes it super easy to pack delicious lunches my kid would actually eat?  Yes, please!

school lunch

MOMables was started by Laura Fuentes, a mom of 3 kids under seven years old, to help other parents get out of the lunch packing rut. MOMables offers a weekly school lunch meal plan with 5 lunch ideas, a prep-ahead sheet and a shopping list to help us busy parents feed our kids good food they will actually eat for only $6 per month!  Their one simple plan approach has built in substitutions for vegetarian, gluten free and nut free options when needed (it is not a dairy free or vegan plan).

Is It Really That Easy?

YES! MOMables makes it so easy to plan and shop for exactly what you need to make great school lunches your kids will love.  Everything you need to make meal planning easy is all there.  I also loved the extensive recipe index on the site that lists a ton of great breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner ideas, with options for allergy-friendly foods.  There’s also great tips on how to keep lunches hot or cold, how to freeze and prepare foods, and so much more.   When I calculated the cost, I know we spend at least $80 a month purchasing lunches for our son at school.  MOMables is a great value for a very minimal price and I can see this service helping me save money when school starts back.

Laura has been kind enough to offer my readers a sample week of MOMables for FREE, when you sign up for their weekly newsletter. It’s also loaded with free recipes, tips and so much more each week.

Already convinced?  You can sign up with MOMables right now and start receiving your weekly lunch plans to get ahead of the game before school starts!

While You Were At Camp

Posted on June 27, 2014January 10, 2016 by Mandy

What’s it like for a mom to have five whole days to herself with no kid around because the kid is at a day camp for the first time?  Allow me to share how my week has been.

Monday-  I walked my son in to camp and promptly found his group leader.  I deposited his lunch in the proper place and hung around for a few minutes making sure he was going to be ok with this.  I had already told him bye (but I did NOT kiss him in front of everyone), but five minutes later I walked over to tell him I was really leaving this time.  He replied, “You can go now, Mom!”.  OK, OK. After getting back into the car, I immediately called my husband, then my mom, to tell them how he “did” at drop off.  Yes, I did.  I spent the day cleaning and staying extremely busy because it was just too quiet without him around.  I stalked the camp’s Facebook page and happily clapped my hands when I spotted a picture of him.  Then I had to inspect him in each picture.  Did he look like he was having fun?  Had he made any friends? I hope he is drinking enough water and enjoying himself.  I couldn’t wait to go pick him up and hear about his day.  After seven long hours, it was finally time to pick him up.  He walked out to the car in a daze.  I asked him how it went, he told me it was fun.  Then he promptly fell asleep and slept for 2 hours.

Tuesday-  No walking the kid in this morning.  I dropped him off, called my husband to report on the drop-off,  and went over to my parent’s house to hang out with them to stay busy.  Went to lunch with my mom.    The afternoon seemed to drag by.  It was still too quiet without him here.  I took in a short nap.  I still stalked the camp Facebook page for pictures.  I shared pictures on my timeline.  Happily bounded into the car to go pick him up.  He wasn’t as tired this afternoon, so he told me more about his day on the way home.  Felt relieved that he had a great time. I think I can make it three more days.

okra camp

Wednesday-  Dropped off the kid.  Called the husband.  Rinse, repeat.  Felt like being extremely lazy, so I finally relaxed a little.  I played Candy Crush.  I watched 80’s sitcoms.  And yes, I still stalked the camp Facebook page for picture updates.  And yes, I still couldn’t wait to pick him up and hear about his day.  Thinking I should probably lighten up (ya think?) and take advantage of my alone time for the remaining two days.

Thursday– Woohoo!  Dropped the kid off and called the husband .  Ate junk food.  Watched The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.  Blogged!  Curled up with our kitty Clyde and had a LONG nap.  Avoided chores.  Wondered to myself why I hadn’t been doing this all week.  What?  It’s time to go pick up the kid already?

Friday-  It’s the last day of camp.  Where did the week go?  I survived!  Now, to plan next summer’s camps…

4 Things That Kill Blogging Productivity

Posted on June 17, 2014January 10, 2016 by Mandy

how to blog

For a few months now, I’ve struggled with balancing blogging with my other life responsibilities.  I’ve had a full plate this past year with work, family, and taking classes to renew my teaching license.  I can’t tell you how many times that when I’ve actually had the  time to sit down and blog, I end up with absolutely nothing to show for it.  I chalked up my lack of attention to blogging  as a classic case of writer’s block and a lack of time and felt I would eventually work through it.  Now that I am off work for the summer and have a large amount of time I could be devoting to blogging, I’ve once again found that actually sitting down to write a post is difficult.  As I’ve reflected on my journey through blogging these past few years, I’m realizing that there are things I do and have done in the past that all but stifle my desire to write a blog post most of the time.

The Comparison Game

If you blog you probably also read blogs because you enjoy them.  You may even belong to an online community of bloggers that share the ups and downs and the tips of the blogging trade with one another.  I think building community with your blogging is a great thing and I can honestly attest to the fact that I wouldn’t have enjoyed some of the opportunities I have experienced through blogging had it not been for some great blogging communities.  Even still, I sometimes start comparing my blog to others who have a better blog design, better writing skills, exciting opportunities, etc.  What can I say?  I’m human.  However, I know if I sat here dwelling on all of the things my blog is lacking, I’d probably convince myself to stop altogether.  There will always be bloggers who look better than you, make more money than you, write better than you, and have a better looking blog than you.  However, I’ve also read enough blogs for long enough to to know that those “better” bloggers are also human and sometimes we aren’t seeing the full picture.   We only blog about the parts of our life we are comfortable sharing.  Repeat that as needed.

Social Media Suck-In

I swear I’m going to get that blog post up just as soon as I check Facebook real quick.  Three days later, I open up my laptop to start that post and once again, I’m sucked in by social media.  As I’m typing this, I have forced myself to close every window on my computer except this blogging platform I use.  I’m guilty of always wanting to know what is going on and Facebook is my personal time stealer.  Constantly checking Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram instead of writing up those posts you “keep meaning to” write results in nothing but endless procrastination and can even head into the comparison game territory.

Trying to Do It All

If you look at some of the more successful blogs in your niche, you might notice that those bloggers seem to be great at everything.  They can take the best pictures, whip up the best recipes, come up with the most pin-worthy decorations/activities/ideas. They have their own e-books, book deals, and some even appear on national television. These bloggers do it all, and if you find that you can (and want) to do it all too, then great!  However, there are also those of us bloggers who don’t have expensive cameras and the skills to go with them.  You may not have time to stage food pictures, come up with creative birthday decorations to share with your readers, or  have the time to chalk paint life back into a salvaged roadside furniture piece and blog every detail.  I realized early on that photography and cooking is not my specialty in blogging and I don’t kill myself trying anymore.  I work full time outside the home and I know my limitations.  Find something you can do really well on your blog and do it.  One of the very best blogs I read features absolutely no images in posts, but the writing is amazing, so it doesn’t even matter.

 Limiting Yourself

Up until recently, I always cringed every time I read an article on how to blog better because I would always run across those two words that grate my nerves the most:  “niche” and “goals”.  Your niche is what you write about exclusively (beauty, fashion, parenting, reviews) and your goals are the fruits you want to see of your blogging.  When I started blogging, these two buzzwords were not on the radar.  Some believe that you can enjoy more blogging success by focusing on one thing and writing about it very well.  I’m not saying that isn’t true, but it’s a little disheartening to those of us who started our blogs writing about a hodge podge of different things.  On my blog you will find a little of everything:  product reviews, posts about family and work, and just random pictures I take.  I’m not a six-figure blogger by any means, but I have enjoyed some success with this blog and I think you shouldn’t have to limit yourself unless that’s your goal.

There are those who start a blog with the sole goal of making money, and then there are those who start blogging just to share their life. Some bloggers want both. None of these goals are wrong .  Do you know what I have learned about blogging goals?  They are always evolving.  When I fist started blogging I was working part time and  I was more focused on product reviews and earning money through opportunities that connected me with brands.  Now that my time is a little more limited during school months, I do what I can to still maintain a little passive income, but I’m now more focused on trying to share more personal posts and write about the things I actually want to write about.  This may change again at some point, but I’m ok with it now.  I used to believe that in order for my blog to thrive I had to pick one goal and stick to it.  Just as boxing yourself into a niche because you feel like you must do it to be more successful can kill your passion for blogging, so can being inflexible with your blogging goals.

If you blog, have you struggled with these productivity killers?  Do you have some of your own that I didn’t list here?

Pork Steak and Hidden Valley Potatoes

Posted on June 11, 2014January 10, 2016 by Mandy

One good thing about being off work all summer is that I have time to cook like I really want to.  During the week, E.B. and I eat with my parents a few nights and we order pizza one night during the week, so I look forward to the weekends when my husband, who adores being in the kitchen, cooks up my favorite meals.  I’ll be the first to admit I’m not the greatest cook.  You definitely won’t be seeing tons of recipes here on my blog, but when I do find something I love and cook really well, I like to share it.

Pork Steak & Hidden Valley Potatoes

When I cook, I keep it simple.  No exotic ingredients over here, y’all.  I also can’t promise you this is the healthiest meal, but if you love meat and potatoes, I can promise you this is amazing.  Do you like beautifully plated food pictures?  So do I!  But again, you won’t find that here.  These few pictures are compliments of my Nokia Lumia 1020.  No fancy shmancy camera here.

14215582627_44e708c17d_z

For the pork steaks, I marinate them in this Jack Daniels liquid marinade for a few hours before I grill them.  This stuff is my husband’s discovery, and it’s just as amazing on chicken and beef.  In fact, I think it’s so good that I would rather eat a steak my husband makes with this stuff at home than go out and have one in a restaurant, and THAT is saying a lot.

14400922164_24f4a1beb9_z

Once you marinate them, pop them on the grill (I use a small George Forman) and grill them until done.  That’s it!  See?  Even I can do this!

The potatoes are super simple as well.  My mom made these when I was growing up and it quickly became one of my favorite side dishes.  I use the small red potatoes because they cut easier.  Just wash and chop up a bunch, spread them in a casserole dish (any size, really).  Melt a stick of butter and drizzle over the potatoes, then shake a pouch of the dry Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing Mix (several packages come in a box) and cover them with foil and bake at 350 for an hour.

Again?  Easy!

Can you believe my child won’t eat ANY of this?  Oh well…more leftovers for me!

No More Leftovers

Posted on June 9, 2014January 10, 2016 by Mandy

Today is the first day of summer vacation for E.B. and I.  He’s been out of school for almost two weeks already, but Friday was my last day of work.

14361135876_58791b350b_z

Here we sit, side by side, still in our pajamas (with me sans makeup and hair pulled back) at noon.  He begged me to download a game on his computer and watch him play.  I did.  Although I have no idea about the point of this video game or what in the world it all means, it matters to him.  So today, I sat with him, completely zoned in on this game because I made a promise to my family this summer.

No more leftovers.

Since school started in August and I plowed my way through my librarian position at my new school, my husband and I have probably went out by ourselves a grand total of one time.  We’ve taken one Saturday family fun trip in this time.  My husband has taken our son on weekend outings, like the skating rink or the movies, but I’ve always stayed behind.  Too tired.  Too busy.  Too much housework to catch up on.   I took three classes this spring to renew my teaching license.

No, I have to finish my classwork.

I’ll look in just a second.

I’ll be done in just a minute.

No, we can’t have a story tonight because I’m just too tired to read.

Busy, busy, busy.  I can’t begin to even tell you how much of my slack my husband has picked up for me since then.  He has been the glue, y’all.

Summer is here and although two months stretch out long ahead of me, I want to fill it with as much “yes” as I can.  Yes, we can go out of town and goof off for the day.  Yes, dinner will be waiting on you when you come home.   Yes, the laundry can wait.  Yes, I’ll sit here and watch you play a game I have no clue about.  Because I love you and you are the most important things to me.  Because I’m sorry I don’t multitask very well.  Because I feel immense guilt for trying to be all things and do all things.  Because nine summers from now, hanging with mom and dad won’t be the cool thing to do.

Because my family deserves more of me than just what’s left over.

Summer Fun Musicals and Netflix Giveaway #StreamTeam

There are just some movies from my childhood that still stop me in my tracks and draw me in, no matter how many times I’ve seen them.  One of the very first movies I ever remember watching is the musical Grease.  To this day, I can still remember the words to all of the songs in the movie.

60000577_3003364

At 8 years of age, I can tell you that being a Pink Lady and being super impressed with the character of Sandy was high on my list of priorities.  It’s amazing that something as simple as a movie sticks with you so many years later.   I get a little nostalgic when I see friends on social media so excited that their children have discovered this great classic and love it, too.  I have a nine year old son who is not impressed.  Yet.  Maybe it’s a girl thing?

Last weekend my husband and I watched Rent for the first time and we loved it!  I have not seen the movie Frozen, but I knew that Idina Menzel sings the hit “Let it Go”.  Imagine my surprise to see her starring in Rent!  Although the theme of this musical is a little more mature than I would like for our son to watch at this point, I thought Rent was very well done and the songs really stick with you, just like Grease.

70021658_3483668

I’ve never been a big movie watcher, but I can honestly say that Netflix is bringing our family together and I am so excited to be off work this summer so I can catch up on all that I have been missing out on.

With summer right around the corner, you may be gearing up for your child’s end of the school year plays and musicals.  Perhaps your children are younger and you want to expose them to all of your childhood favorites, and a few new ones as well.  What better way to get excited about those than to watch a fun musical together with Netflix as a family?

There are so many great choices to get the whole family up and moving and singing along.

Stress Stinks! Secret Clinical Strength Deodorant Review & Walmart GC Giveaway

Posted on May 25, 2014January 10, 2016 by Mandy

Ahh.  The end of the school year.  It sounds so easy, like we’re just sliding into home stretch here.  The reality?  Not so much.  Here’s just a few of the things we have (or have had) going on in the past few weeks:

Final testing

Field trips

Awards Days

Closing up the library for the school year duties.

And?  In the thick of it all, I decided along the way somewhere that taking two online course towards renewing my teaching license would be the smartest thing to do so I could enjoy my summer without stress.

I’m not stressed at all.

Did you know that out of the three causes of sweat—heat, activity, and stress—stress sweat has been proven to smell the worst?   Eww!  The last thing I want to have to worry about with all of these other things going on in my life is whether or not my deodorant is doing its job.  Thankfully, I haven’t had to thanks to Secret Clinical Strength.  Moisture activated, and formulated with odor-neutralizing ingredients that release a fresh scent, Secret Clinical Strength is proven to give you 4X* the protection against stress sweat.

14270972695_11217ede6a_b

Let me let you in on a little Secret…(See how I did that?  I know, I know….) I have been brand loyal to the same deodorant since I was 15 years old.  That’s 25 years!  Naturally, I was a little hesitant to give Secret Clinical Strength deodorant a try, but I’m very glad I did.  Since using it for a couple of weeks now, I can honestly say that it works just as well as my other brand and I can still actually smell the fresh, powdery smell even after a tough day.  Even better, the Powder Protection scent I tried doesn’t have an overwhelming powdery smell like I have experienced with another brand in the past.

It works, it smells great, and I love how the invisible solid doesn’t show up on my clothes.

Now available in two new forms, Clear Gel and Invisible Solid, and in scents like Ooh-La-La Lavender, Secret Clinical Strength will help you feel dry, fresh, and fearless all day long!  Visit www.nostresssweat.com for the scoop on stress sweat!

GIVEAWAY

Feeling a little stressed?  How about a $25 Walmart Gift Card to help you let loose with a little retail therapy?  Just fill in the Rafflecopter form below.  Giveaway ends June 2, 2014 at 12 AM CST. Busy May Weekend

Posted on May 5, 2014January 10, 2016 by Mandy

I rarely take off work unless I’m really sick or E.B. is sick, but I always set aside two personal days in May to attend a couple of events at E.B.’s school.  With this school year seeming much longer than usual, it felt great to leave work Thursday afternoon knowing I had an extra day to spend time with my family.

Thursday evening we headed to Lost Pizza.  Not only does this place have the best pizza in town, they also have a VW bus inside the restaurant that the kids can play in.  It has a TV inside and pillows and is always full of kids having a great time.  It’s the sort of place you always run into someone you know.

14084608016_cd7cf16506_b

It has amazing Mississippi Delta infused décor, with a little “hippy” on the side.  Concert posters, antique and vintage items, and crazy cool art cover every available inch of the walls.  It’s a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach!

E.B. is also crazy about the Wii they have there.

14083982706_f505cb2fe8_b

They also give the kids pizza dough to play with.  E.B. said this looked like a brain.  I concur!

14083987566_6994c80933_b

Friday was full of May Day Play Day fun at E.B.’s school.  This takes place at the Delta State University football practice field and it’s full of fun and games.  I did an hour of volunteering in the concessions stand and then spent the rest of the time watching E.B. compete in his chosen activities.  He had a blast and I came home sunburned.  That’s the first year that has happened since he’s been in school.

13920469119_bcb7457a20_b

I can’t get over how grown he looks in this picture.  He’s definitely not a little boy anymore!

My husband cleaned the car and made us amazing meals all weekend.  I don’t know what I would do without him during the school year.  He makes it so much easier for me to be all.the.things, even though he works very hard all week.

Our fun weekend just reminded me how much I am really looking forward to being off all summer so I can spend more time with my people.
