Fitness Tips for Busy Parents #StreamTeam

Posted on January 30, 2014January 10, 2016 by Mandy

When you’re a busy parent, finding time to exercise can be difficult.  My typical week is filled with very early wake-ups, long work days, homework with my son, keeping up with the household chores, and a few unhealthy fast-food meals when things get especially hectic.  I know this isn’t doing my long-term health any favors and I’m anxiously awaiting the weather to warm up so my son and I can get out and go walking.   Of course, fitting this activity in makes me tired just thinking about it, but I know once I get started it will get easier with time.  Need some help with finding the time to take some small steps to getting fit?  Check out these tips below from celebrity fitness expert Harley Pasternak on how you can find little ways to make healthy changes.

Harley Pasternak’s Fitness Tips for Busy Parents

1. Resist: Even the busiest mom or dad can carve out at least 5 minutes to do some resistance "sculpting" exercise. Pick one exercise a day (i.e. lunge, squats, superman) and do 3-4 sets of 20 reps. Over time, add some weight and increase the sets.

2. Walk: You shouldn’t stop moving from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed. Use an activity monitor like a Fitbit to make sure you walk at least 10,000 steps a day. Make your phone calls as you walk around the block, park your car a little further away, take the stairs, and walk to your favorite cafe in the morning (instead of brewing your own).

3. Blend: Soups and smoothies are the perfect "on the go" meals that take only seconds to prepare. They’re a great way to get all your veggies, fruits, healthy fats and lean protein in one meal.

4. Be Entertained… But Not on the Couch: I tell all my busy parents to make sure they’re moving while watching their favorite show. Whether it be "Breaking Bad" or "House of Cards," stream your show to your phone or tablet with Netflix and you may end up working out longer and harder!

5. Sleep: One of the most common complaints I get from parents is they are exhausted! It’s so important to get at least 7 hours of sleep a night. Parents — make sure there is no light at all in your bedroom. That means no cell phones flickering, televisions blaring or alarm clocks flashing. Studies show even the smallest amount of light can disturb your sleep patterns. Other sleep tips include avoiding caffeine after noon, wearing an eye mask and avoiding surfing the web before you fall asleep.

Small Changes

After reading over this list, I can see where I could definitely make some small changes now to get myself on a path to better health.  Like when my husband and I are catching up on old episodes of The Wonder Years on Netflix while we sit on the couch.  Ahem.

Need some inspiring entertainment to get you moving?  Check out how many calories you can burn watching these great titles on Netflix:

New Year’s Organizing With The Brother P-touch Label Maker #sponsored #MC

Posted on January 21, 2014January 10, 2016 by Mandy

I participated in an Ambassador Program on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Brother P-touch. I received a product samples to facilitate my review and promotional item as a thank you for participating.

Have you ever bought something you didn’t know you really needed, only to wonder how you ever got along without it?  That’s exactly how I feel about the Brother P-touch Label Maker I have been testing out over the last couple of months.  I feel more confident in all areas of my life when I am organized and know where to find things, so this label maker has been the perfect addition to my organizational efforts at home and work.

Over the holidays, I was able to finally sort out and get all of our holiday décor labeled correctly so that finding it next year won’t be the nightmare it always has been.

I’m also planning a pantry and toy box overhaul in our home as soon as Spring Break rolls around.  However, after the holidays, it was back to work for me.  Which was just as well, because this?

disorganized cabinet

Nightmare and a half!

This is one of my storage cabinets in the library.    I actually had it looking somewhat decent before school started, and then…school started.  Things got really busy and I was pressed for time to spend setting up everything I had hauled in from my previous job.  Add in hurried dashes through the cabinet to find something and, well, here we are.  It’s a huge mess and so not conducive to my productivity, but that’s all about to change with some plastic organizing containers and my Brother P-touch label maker.

organized school supplies

It’s a start, right?

In honor of celebrating their 25th Anniversary, Brother P-touch will have special promotions and deals at office super stores and other retailers.   You’ll also want to check out their 25th Anniversary site showcasing the amazing ways that people are using their Brother P-touch label makers to get their homes and businesses organized and productive.

Polar Vortex of Funk- Winter Marches On

Posted on January 12, 2014January 10, 2016 by Mandy

winter marches on

Hopefully by now everyone is thawed out from last week’s Polar Vortex.  You would think living in the South, the cold air that we got wouldn’t be all that bad, but even though we didn’t see any snow, the temperatures were pretty brutal.   We had some trouble with our water pipes for two days, and let me tell you, THAT was for the birds!  I had to fill up our toilet tank with water just to flush and it made life just a little inconvenient to say the least.  However, our pipes finally thawed and I was very thankful that we made it through those few bitterly cold days pretty much ok.  There are so many other people who had to deal with no electricity, tons of snow, and being cooped up for awhile.

However, this past week has been tough for me.  Last Monday was the first day back to school since Christmas break and I have never had a really, really tough time adjusting back to my regular schedule.  Usually, in years past, I have always been excited about getting back to work and feeling productive.  Not this time, and I can’t put my finger on what is different.  I work at a wonderful school, so I know that I wasn’t dreading going back to a job I didn’t love.  I guess I just enjoyed being home so much with my family, with no schedules, and much more quality time than we normally get to enjoy together.

What I do know is that it has taken me every ounce of willpower I can muster up just to do the most mundane things:  take a shower, fix my hair, put on makeup.  I’m normally a morning person and don’t mind at all getting up at 4:30 or 5:00 A.M to start my work day.  It’s like my brain is in a fog.  It has lifted a little.  Today is actually a good day and I managed to get a lot of housework done this weekend.   I’ve also been in a pretty good bit of pain.  I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia after having E.B., and they’ve both really kicked in with this colder weather.

Maybe it’s just the weather.  Maybe it’s just my health issues coupled with the weather.  Whatever it is, I hate feeling like this and I’m fighting it.

One Easy Way to Protect Your Identity- #IDSafetySeason

#spon: I’m required to disclose a relationship between our site and Fellowes. This could include the Fellowes providing us w/content, product, access or other forms of payment.

The holidays may be coming to an end, but protecting your identity is something you should be vigilant about all throughout the year.  This is something I make a point to stay on top of because it can affect so many areas of your life, such as your credit score, credit card balances, and bank account balances.  I know over the holiday season I made many online purchases, but I felt comfortable in doing so because I trusted the merchants I bought from and I check our account daily to make sure no fraudulent charges are made.  For added protection, I also receive alerts from a credit-monitoring company.  Yet even still, if you’ve paid attention to the news recently, you know that a major retailer experienced a serious breach of security in their customer’s payment methods.

It’s no secret that identity thieves have some pretty unthinkable ways to steal a person’s identity.  One way you can protect your sensitive documents at home is to use a paper shredder.  The Fellowes P-12C paper shredder is a great way to make sure anything you throw away has been completely shredded.  I’ve been using this shredder to shred junk mail, credit card applications, and anything else that I don’t want to end up in the wrong hands.

The Fellowes P-12C is perfect for anyone, from the finance-savvy mom to the paper ridden college student.  This shredder is a serious workhorse, and includes:

⁃ Cross-Cut blades that destroy 12 sheets of paper into approximately 309 particles per sheet, making it extremely difficult to reassemble

⁃ SafeSense® technology which automatically disables the shredder when hands touch the paper opening

⁃ The ability to shred credit cards, paper clips, staples and junk mail for added convenience

I feel confident knowing that anything with sensitive information being thrown away in our home is no longer anything that can compromise my family’s identity.  The P-12C can be purchased at Walmart Stores nationwide and at www.Walmart.com for a suggested retail price of $99.97.

Reading Fair Projects/ Reading Fair Boards 2013

Posted on January 3, 2014January 23, 2024 by Mandy

This year, our school’s reading fair sort of ran smack into the holiday season, so I haven’t had a chance to sit down and recap it until now.  This was a real learning experience for me because it was the first time I had so much participation from the students.  This was done on a much larger scale than I was used to at my previous school, and other than knowing I wouldn’t be waiting until close to the holidays again to hold it, it did go great. I have to send a HUGE thank you out to my co-workers, our school IB coordinator, and my principal for helping me in so many ways, from providing snacks for the judges to offering advice and being helpful when I knew sometimes this was a bit extra work for the teachers, too.  I work with some incredible people, and I am so grateful for that.  My kids also turned in excellent reading fair projects that amazed me and made me proud of their creativity.

On to the projects….

I snapped a few pictures of the great projects our kids entered.  Some of these were family projects, and some were individual.  Our school is K-2nd grade, so our judges were looking for evidence that the children had some hand in creating these and could articulate their understanding of the story they chose as well.  In the past, when I posted these, I heard from people who snidely remarked about how you could tell the parents did everything.  That may have been true in some cases, so I wanted to emphasize that, although these projects came from the early elementary level, the kids did have to present them well to place.

I do have some handouts about how to do the reading fair that I want to share, and I promise I will get those up real soon.  I’m fine-tuning some of those to serve our students better next time.

2014

2014

Happy New Year!   I wish I could tell you I rang in the new year with some exciting, amazing party, but this is how it went down at our house:

subway sandwich

Subway sandwiches and watching cheesy New Years Eve countdowns on TV.  Speaking of which, I don’t know if I’m just showing my age or what, but none of those shows were really exciting to me this year.  In any case, I spent the evening exactly the way I wanted to, piled up on the couch with my little family in our warm home.   Twenty minutes before midnight I was ready to go to bed.

I’m just too lazy and enjoying my time off too much to go back and post my top 5 posts of the year or even come up with my New Years Resolution list.  I don’t have any sage words of wisdom for starting fresh or advice on reaching your goals.    2013 was good to us, even though there were some slight bumps along the way, but overall we had a wonderful year.   I hope and pray that the new year is just as well.   I hope the same for you, too.
