How To Get the Most From Your Healthcare Plan

Posted on September 17, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

medical symbol

If you have a healthcare plan, you might be like me, sometimes confused about the services offered and how you can get the most of what you are paying for.  Since working and having my own healthcare plan since I was 21, I’ve seen some major changes in what plans offer, and most of these changes have been for the better.  Of course, I have also noticed that healthcare costs are definitely on the rise.

So how can you be sure that you’re taking advantage of everything your healthcare plan has to offer and maximizing your savings when it comes to receiving medical care?  Cigna has a few tips to help you take stock.

Mid-Year Health Check-in Tips

PLAN. We’re often great at budgeting household expenses like our mortgage, groceries or vacations, but many of us don’t think about budgeting for healthcare expenses. The more you can anticipate upcoming costs, the more you can save while still receiving the high quality care you expect for you and your family.

Spend one night reviewing your healthcare expenses. Know what you have spent to-date and think about what your future costs may be. For example, will anyone need glasses or braces next year? Knowing what your current spending habits are and what your future costs may be, can help you budget accordingly.

PREPARE. There are a few things that you can do now to ensure you’re prepared to make quick decisions when the time is appropriate.
· Know where the nearest urgent care facility is. These facilities provide the same quality of care for non-emergent conditions as an ER, but have shorter wait times and are typically less expensive.
· Check your health plan to see if they offer a 24/7 nurse hotline to provide you with health-related advice around the clock.
· Keep the phone number handy for your local pharmacy. Prescriptions can be called in quickly, right from the doctor’s office, saving time.

PREVENT. Taking advantage of preventative services offered by your health plan could mean the difference between life and early death.
· Visit your doctor each year for a checkup – make the appointment on a memorable day so you remember each year to go! Also, take advantage of the free services offered, such as access to dieticians and nurses, who can answer questions and provide advice.

Our family has taken advantage in the past of using 24-hour nurse hotlines.  I can honestly say these can be extremely helpful for those times when you’re just not sure if symptoms you or a family member may be experiencing could be considered an emergency situation.  We’re also big believers in preventative measures in our family.  We see our doctor every 3 months and I also have to take a moment and brag on my husband, who has lost over 30 pounds with the sole intention of just to feel better and get healthier.  In doing so, he will probably soon be taken off medications he has had to take for about 7 years now.  Not only is he improving his overall health, but the money we will save that we normally spend on prescriptions will be substantial.

Cigna has also put together a series of videos discussing these tips in depth that are definitely worth checking out.

When it comes to keeping you and your family healthy there’s so much more to talk about. Join the conversation at YouTube.com/Cigna.

Classroom Back-To-School Shopping

Posted on September 13, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

Shortly after I have my own son prepared for starting school, I have to start turning a good amount of my attention to my own students and my classroom.  Each year, we’re always in need of new classroom equipment and supplies.  Surveying our classroom needs and planning for purchases is a major process.

I love being a school librarian and one fun aspect of that is shopping for my students each year.  I’m a bargain hunter, so I’m always on the lookout for school equipment for less, looking for everything we need to have a successful year while stretching our allotted dollars as far as they will go.  It’s tough sometimes, because software and books, not to mention the bigger ticket items like computers and ink, can be expensive.

One of my goals this school year is to load up on as much educational software as I can.  My students love to use the computer, and it’s such an important skill for them to grasp in our technology-fueled world.  We have several major, measurable reading, spelling, vocabulary and math programs already in place, but I also want to add a few more programs to give them more options to choose from.

I’m also loving the fact that many teaching resources, such as printable worksheets and lesson planning materials can now be found online.  It’s a huge help to me as I plan our weekly lessons.

I’m excited about our new materials and can’t wait to get them in and start using them.  I know my students will be excited, too.

Barilla- Microwavable Meals For On-The-Go (And Giveaway)

Posted on September 9, 2012January 20, 2024 by Mandy

barillaI eat lunch on-the-go five days a week.  Every working day means grabbing something super quick in time to be ready for my next group of students.  Most days I eat cafeteria food, which is sometimes ok, and other times I grab a bag of chips and call it good, which is definitely NOT ok.  I try to pack lunches the night before, and sometimes I succeed, but I have so little time because of my “mom duties” at night (supper, bathing the kid, homework, bedtime) that it’s just easier to “grab and go”.

BARILLA MICROWAVABLE MEALS

Barilla now has a new line of microwavable meals that can help you eat healthier while you’re on-the-go.

My family was sent five Barilla Microwavable Meals to try out and see if it made those quick grab-and-go eating times a little more healthy and delicious.  The meals come in five different flavors and include Tomato & Basil, Marinara, Spicy Marinara, Whole Grain Tomato & Basil, and Whole Grain Vegetable Marinara.

With Barilla Microwavable Meals, you get:

  • 100% Natural Ingredients
  • No preservatives
  • Relatively low calories (only 320 calories per meal)
  • Two whole grain options

I’m quite a bit skeptical about meals that are packaged because most of the time I find that I’m having to sacrifice taste.  However, I love Barilla and use their rotini pasta religiously in the salads I do manage to make for lunch during the week, so I was excited to give these meals a try.  My husband was also thrilled.  He is a truck driver and likes to keep hassle-free foods in his truck in case of emergencies (like being stranded on a interstate in a blizzard) and for those times when he stops in smaller towns with no truck parking at restaurants (or no restaurant at all).

barilla microwavable meals

I chose the Mezze Penne Spicy Marinara to try out and I have to say I was floored!  The marinara sauce was robust and amazing and had just the right kick of heat.  I love that these meals are hearty…you definitely get a good portion in each.  Each meal heats up in 60 seconds, so there is no waiting a few minutes, stirring, then heating again.  That in itself is a major selling point with me!

I also love the fact that the sauce tray just lifts right out of the main cooking tray, so there is no awkward and sloppy stirring involved.  If you’re not crazy about too much sauce, you can just add as much as you want.  I did find that the pasta was a bit firmer than I was expecting once it was cooked, but I’m one of those people that likes really soft pasta, so this wasn’t a total turn-off, just different.

barilla microwavable

I think this little microwavable meal is pretty much perfect and can’t believe something in a package can taste so great.  We also found that we preferred the regular pasta to the whole-grain wheat options.

Be sure to visit the Barilla website to grab a coupon for $1 off, learn more about their microwaveable meals, and check out Barilla on Facebook.

GIVEAWAY:

I have 5 coupons to give away!  Each coupon is good for one FREE Barilla Microwavable Meal.  I will draw 5 winners who will each receive one coupon. U.S. Only, void where prohibited.   The giveaway ends on September 30, 2012, at 12:01 AM EST.

Win A Pair Of Christian Louboutin’s From Top Floor

Posted on September 8, 2012September 9, 2012 by Mandy

I love shoes.  If my shoes are all wrong, my whole outfit just feels all wrong.  I’ve been slowly updating my “shoe wardrobe” to reflect a look that’s more on trend.  I get lazy and always seem to fall back on my old standbys. ( Case in point.  Umm, yeah.)  But I also go to great lengths (and neighboring states) to find exactly what I want in a shoe.  I wouldn’t call myself a “shoe addict”, but I think a great, quality pair of shoes can take you a long, long way.

I grew up watching Sesame Street and it still has a sentimental place in my heart.  I spent many an hour after school parked on my grandmother’s couch watching my favorite characters teach me about letters, numbers, and friendship.  I’m so glad Sesame Street is still around for kids to enjoy.

elmo makes music

Sesame Street Live is a larger-than-life, musical touring stage production featuring Big Bird, Elmo, Cookie Monster, Bert and Ernie…and more. Each performance is 90 minutes of singing, dancing and audience participation, including a 15-minute intermission. The perfect length for very young children!  Sesame Street Live: Elmo Makes Music is coming to the BancorpSouth Arena in Tupelo, Mississippi on October 2 & 3 and I have a family 4 pack of tickets to give away! About the Show:

Mark your calendar for this once-in-a-lifetime event—monsters becoming musicians! Elmo, The Count, Cookie Monster, Big Bird, Bert & Ernie and all their funny and furry friends are taking to the stage to share the magical world of music with children. When Jenny, the new Sesame Street music teacher, moves into town, her instruments get lost. Jenny’s new Sesame Street friends quickly come to her rescue, and they all discover “instruments” that they never knew existed…rubber duckies, trash can lids and even their own laps! The characters teach children, and themselves, that everyone has the ability to make beautiful music, whether they realize it or not. Don’t miss this opportunity to count along with The Count, visit Elmo’s World and do the Crumb-A-Rumba with Rosita and Cookie Monster at Sesame Street Live “Elmo Makes Music.”

Fight Back-To-School Germs With Kleenex- $100 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

Posted on September 3, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

shield sneeze swish

It’s that time of year.  Here in Mississippi, school has started and the farmers are burning off their fields.  It seems like everyone we know is sick or having sinus trouble.  I’ve personally had to buy three boxes of Kleenex for my classroom since school has started.  According to a study by the University of Arizona, the average student’s hand has almost 1,500 more bacterial cells than commonly cleaned door handles and knobs. Doesn’t that make you want to run and wash your hands? There’s almost no way of avoiding a sneeze, but you can help your kids keep their hands clean by arming them with Kleenex brand tissues with Sneeze Shield, a proprietary coating that helps to keep “stuff” in the tissue and off hands. My thoughts?  If it’s helping to stop the spread germs in my classroom, I don’t mind spending the money!

Kleenex has a fun new way to help you teach your child to avoid spreading germs when they have to sneeze.  It’s called the Shield. Sneeze. Swish.

1. Shield your kids with Kleenex brand’s unique Sneeze Shield tissues

2. Sneeze when you gotta!

3. Swish that Kleenex tissue right into the waste basket (two points!)

Want to see my son doing the Shield. Sneeze. Swish.? Click here!

You can visit the Kleenex website to star in your own Shield. Sneeze. Swish. Elf Yourself video by clicking here! It’s super easy to do and I promise it will put a smile on your face!  Your kids will love it!
