Planning a Romantic Getaway on a Budget

Posted on October 28, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

Most people associate romantic getaways with costly dalliances in five-star resorts located on sunlit tropical beachfront property. However, romance doesn’t have to involve huge expenditures of cash.

In fact, dinner served in front of the fireplace at an intimate inn during the winter is much more conducive to romance than commercial atmospheres that offer canned romance. The next time you want to get away with your guy, plan a trip to a country inn in a location fairly far from where you live but not so far that you will be spending a good chunk of your getaway traveling.

One of the best aspects of visiting a country inn is that the ambiance is romantic during any time of the year. Wildflowers provide splashes of vibrancy during spring and summer months, while changing autumn leaves and crisp starlit nights characterize the months of October and November in many parts of the country. Snowfall in winter provides an entrancing atmosphere for lovers. Instead of scrimping and going without things that you want so that you can afford to fly to the tropics with your lover, you should be looking for deals on cocktail dresses to wear in front of a crackling fire while sipping wine in the living room of a country inn.

One of the best ways to have a romantic weekend at a country inn is to call ahead and ask the host to recommend a time when the establishment isn’t very crowded. You should also enlist the assistance of the host or hosts in finding interesting things to do in the local community. If the inn is located in wine tasting country, for instance, you may be able to participate in tasting tours or visit tasting rooms on your own.

Many country inns are also located near good walking trails where you and your lover can commune with nature for the better part of the day. If the weather is reasonably warm, you should pack a picnic lunch with a nice bottle of wine to enjoy in the woods or in a meadow. If the weather is rainy, snowy or otherwise cold, a visit to a local museum or art gallery would be a good afternoon pastime. As your host if there are any local musical performances or theater productions available that you can attend.

It is more important to spend time with your partner than to be overwhelmed by stunning scenery and weighted down by hefty price tags. Pick a charming country place where you can explore the community as well as reconnect with one another. Low-key establishments in areas with abundant natural beauty are recommended for those who want to focus on each other more than their environment or activities. Many couples have success booking reservations during the standard slow times of the area that they are planning to visit.

No matter where you and your man decide to go for your next romantic getaway, be sure to make him the major focus of your attention.

This is a guest post.

Classroom File Organization

Posted on October 26, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

I’m fortunate in that I have beautiful furniture in my library at school and a big area to work with.  I love the bright colors and I think it is so inviting for the kids.  I like for my students to feel right at home in the library and do my best to keep our room clean and highly organized.  I fully admit to being a neat freak and just feel like my whole world is “off” if things aren’t in their designated place, even in my library.

One item I have my eye on to help me with our Accelerated Reader folder storage issue is a wooden tray unit that rolls.  I think it would be so perfect for storing the students’ folders.  I love that it rolls, which makes it super easy to put it in a general area where the kids can grab their own folders and store them when they are finished.  Then, I can simply roll the filing unit out of the way when our day is complete.  There are several color options for the trays, which also makes this stand out from your basic black or grey office furniture.  I could definitely see the color options being terrific for helping each class identify which drawers were theirs.

Viking has so many perfect office product solutions, such as furniture, cleaning supplies, and office products.  It’s great for one-stop shopping to get all of the supplies you need to keep your work place flowing.

Safe Haven Giveaway

Posted on October 25, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

safe haven book

If you are a fan of Nicholas Sparks’ books, you will be excited to know that Safe Haven, the story about a young woman’s struggle to love again, will be in theaters on February 8, 2013.  Sparks is the best-selling author behind The Notebook and Dear John.  Safe Haven stars Joshua Duhamel and Julianne Hough.

SAFE HAVEN

When a mysterious young woman arrives in a small North Carolina town, her reluctance to join the tight knit community raises questions about her past. Slowly, she begins putting down roots, and gains the courage to start a relationship with Alex, a widowed store owner with two young children. But dark secrets intrude on her new life with such terror that she is forced to rediscover the meaning of sacrifice and rely on the power of love in this deeply moving romantic thriller.

But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo’s empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

I don’t know about y’all, but this looks like a fantastic movie!  Of course, the bookworm in me will HAVE to read the book first!

If you’re looking for some great children’s books to get your kids in the spirit of Halloween, be sure and check out these seasonal titles from Harper Collins Children’s Books:

Just Say Boo by Susan Hood

"Boo!" of course! In this charmingly spooky story by Susan Hood, little trick-or-treaters learn just what to say in every Halloween situation. From rattling bones to ghostly footsteps, Susan captures all the best scares of the season—and teaches just the right way to dispel fears in favor of fun. Jed Henry’s lustrous watercolors add the perfect crisp chill to this fall-weather story.

For if a skeleton groans as she rattles her bones, what do you say?

It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff

Join Mouse from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie as he decorates all the pumpkins in the patch!

Mia: Time To Trick-Or-Treat by Robin Farley

Mia and her best friends are going to be matching ballerinas for Halloween. Matching pink ballerinas, that is! But when Ruby wants to be green and Anna wants to be blue, things get a little . . . colorful! Can the tutu-tastic friends get their costumes together before it’s time to trick or treat?

This book includes a full page of stickers to dress up Mia and her ballerina buddies!

I was generously sent these books for review and they did not disappoint.  My son was crazy about Just Say Boo! and I will be reading all three of them again this week to my students at school.  I know they will be excited!

I was sent these books to facilitate my review.  No other compensation was received.  All opinions are my own.

Happy Birthday, Blog!

My little blog turns 5 today.  5.  I don’t think I’ve ever stuck with anything for 5 years.  Well, except my husband, parenthood, and dance classes as a child.  So obviously, the fact that I still love doing this means just that….it must be love.

There are some bloggers who might say that they blog for themselves.  I do blog for myself, but it wouldn’t be nearly as much fun without the readers who come to visit and leave comments, especially those of you who have been here with me for a long time.  Sometimes I get sentimental for those “old days of blogging” and I read through my old posts and comments.  It makes me smile.  I also miss some of those people that used to stop in who no longer blog.

Annnnnyway, before this gets all sappy and sentimental, just know that I appreciate each one of you who stop in here to read.  Thank you for 5 fabulous years!  Here’s to 5 more!

Energizer Family Emergency Kit Giveaway

Posted on October 22, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of Energizer’s Change Your Clock Change Your Battery program, reminding everyone that when you set your clocks back for Daylight Savings Time on November 4, it’s also the perfect time to change the batteries in your smoke detector.  Thirty-eight percent of fatal fire injuries occur in homes with no smoke alarms, while 24 percent occur in homes in which at least one smoke alarm is present but fails to operate, frequently due to dead or missing batteries.*

*Fire statistics were obtained from reports by the Fire Analysis and Research Division of the National Fire Protection Association

Our family was sent an Energizer Family Emergency Kit to have on hand in case of a power failure and a product to help alert us in case of a fire.

2012_1020october40004

Our kit contained the following Energizer products:

· One 2-pack of Energizer® MAX® Batteries (9v) with Power Seal Technology – Dependable, powerful performance for the devices that help keep your family safe; now hold their charge when stored for up to 5 years

· One Energizer® Flameless Wax Candle – Enjoy the realistic flicker of a scented wax candle without the worry of open flame or hassle of soot and dripping wax

· One Energizer® Weatheready® Safety Light – Waterproof flashlight powered by AA, AAA or C cell batteries; includes safety whistle and imprinted preparedness checklist

·One Kidde Battery-Operated Combination Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm

I am so grateful we had some of these Energizer products on hand this past week when our area was under a tornado warning.  I felt better knowing that if we lost power, we had a flashlight, batteries, and the flameless candle.  It also reminded me that I need to collect all of our emergency supplies and keep them together.  I’m forever collecting them all over the house, and that really does me little good when it counts the most.  Keeping them in this handy tote bag will ensure I have what I need and save time.

GIVEAWAY:

Could you use an Energizer Family Emergency Kit?  I also have one containing the products listed above to give away to a lucky reader!  To enter, just fill out the Rafflecopter form below.

Celebrating National Fair Trade Month With A Keurig and Green Mountain Coffee Giveaway

Posted on October 21, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

Is the coffee you drink a fair trade coffee?  Fair trade means that coffee famers receive a fair price for the coffee beans they grow, which in turn helps them to re-invest in their crops, communities, and their future.

Green Mountain Coffee has proudly offered a variety of Fair Trade coffee flavors for more than a decade, including my very favorite (and appropriately named), Columbian Fair Trade Select.  To help spread the word about Fair Trade, Green Mountain Coffee and acclaimed musicians Grace Potter and Michael Franti are celebrating with “Great Coffee, Good Vibes, Pass It On” – an awareness campaign that celebrates the good vibes of fair trade through free concerts and an opportunity to win a trip to source.

You can follow Grace and Michael’s trips at Facebook.com/GreenMountainCoffee, where you can also enter to win a trip to Costa Rica, an area where Green Mountain Coffee Fair Trade Certified Coffee is grown.

2012_1014october30114

As part of the K-Cup Ambassador program, I was sent a variety of fair trade K-Cup packs from Green Mountain Coffee.  I received the Columbian Fair Trade, Sumatran Reserve, and a seasonal favorite, Fair Trade Certified Pumpkin Spice.  I was extremely excited about this mailer because it contained the Pumpkin Spice!  I had never tried this flavor of coffee that I hear everyone raving about this time of year.  Now, I can make it in my own Keurig anytime I want at home!  My verdict?  Add in a couple of sweeteners and it’s sooooooo good!

Now through November 5 at GreenMountainCoffee.com, Fair Trade products are on sale, AND if you use code GMCFTC8162, you can save an additional 10% on all Fair Trade Certified products!  Now is the time to stock up on that Fair Trade Certified Pumpkin Spice!

GIVEAWAY:

Lice Shield Back To School Giveaway

Posted on October 21, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

Lice.  It’s the four letter word that no parent ever wants to hear concerning their child.  As your children have headed back to their classrooms this year, has this been an issue in your child’s school yet?  Wouldn’t it be great to have a product to help prevent your child from getting lice?

Lice Shield is a line of hair care products, gently formulated to reduce the chances of your child (or you) from getting head lice when there is an outbreak.  These are prevention products, not treatment products, and we all know the old saying…”An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.

lice shield

The Lice Shield line contains two products:  A Shampoo and Conditioner in 1 and a Leave In Spray.  These are scientifically known to repel lice, are safe and free of harmful chemicals, and gentle enough to use everyday.

Probably the biggest myth about head lice is that it is a result of poor hygiene, and this is simply not true.  Anyone can get head lice.  There is some great information about head lice at the Lice Shield site that is definitely worth taking a look at if you have concerns.  You can also register your concerns about lice in your area by using the Lice Shield Lice Watch App on Facebook.

Lice Shield recently sent my son a cool package of goodies to help him as he started back to school, and the Lice Shield products were included in this pack.  I’m so glad we have this on hand in case any concerns about lice arise this school year.  They also have a nice smell.
