My husband. God love him, he would give a person the shirt off of his back but sometimes I just wonder “what is he thinking??!!!”.

A few weeks ago a man knocked on our door and introduced himself. I recognized him…he was a couple of years older than me in school. He said he was doing a roof on a house in our neighborhood and noticed that we had a few loose shingles and offered to fix them for $25. I politely thanked him and refused the offer. I’m thinking a few loose shingles is the least of my worries.

So today, I call Cracked Daddy to see what he was up to. He had the day off. He then mentioned that a man knocked on our door and offered to fix some loose shingles for $10!!! My radar immediately went up. I had told Cracked Daddy the first time the man stopped by…and why was that man coming around again when I said no the first time?

Me: “Honey, you told him no, right?”

Cracked Daddy: “It was a good deal!! Why are you mad? It will be ok.”

2 hours later, The Man hasn’t shown back up to fix the shingles. He told Cracked Daddy he had to go get his tall ladder to reach our roof.

OK.

4 hours later….Cracked Daddy calls The Man, who did indeed give Cracked Daddy his cell number and real name. Apparently, one of the man’s workers has fallen off a roof and he is at the emergency room waiting with him until his family arrives. He promises Cracked Daddy he will be there within the hour to fix our roof.

I notice Cracked Daddy is getting very agitated, so I suggest he chill…I mean, we aren’t out of any money if he doesn’t show up, right?

Right?

It is then that Cracked Daddy informs me that he only had a twenty dollar bill, so he gave it to The Man who promise in return to bring his change back.

Do we see where this is going, people?

It’s now 11 PM, I still have loose shingles on my roof and am $20 poorer.

Should I kill my husband now or later?

oh boy~! i can’t believe he gave him his real name and number- lol! that stinks…good thing he didn’t only have a $50 on him!

We have a local guy that goes around mowing lawns for money…and i have about 3X10 feet of grass on my front yard. One day i see the man in front and he had just mowed my neighbors yard and told me he did mine just becuase it’s so small and he was there. I thought, “HOW NICE!” but we rent so i am not in charge of the lawn…then he asks if i have $2 so he can “go get a bud” and he’ll pay me back. i think i gave him $5 and told him don’t worry about it- i’m a sucker! he wasn”t doin it to be nice, he wanted beer. UGH. happens to the best of us.

Last spring, while I was getting some gas on Hwy 49 in Gulfport, some guy materialized virtually out of thin air, giving me a sob story that he was trying to take his wife back to Birmingham to visit her ill mother, and he needed gas money, because the last 3 guys he did some day work for, never paid him.

I looked at him, and then said, “Well, well, well. You asked me the exact same thing 2 months ago up in the parking lot of the Home Depot on 49.

He replied, “Oh no, that wasn’t me, I haven’t been in Gulfport more than a month.”

I said, “Yeah, right. Tell you what, just hang on here with me while I call the Gulfport Police, and they can give you folks a ride to the nearest church where you can ask them for gas money, so you can get to Birmingham.”

I turned back towards my car to put the pump handle back in its cradle, and just that quick, he had disappeared from the parking lot!

    Haven’t seen him since…

I believe your husband has indeed learned his lesson. Tough lesson to learn and hard pill to swallow since you had said, “no” in the first place. Go easy on him. I am sure he feels bad enough.

Oh no! He didn’t. Lesson learned, I guess. I say later. You might not be in the mood later. Potential homicide averted. 😉

Oh man, that stinks!! I’m sorry about the scam 🙁

I would be the one in my family saying “yes” though. Although, I don’t think I would have given him any money beforehand though 😛

Im sure your hubby is beating himself up over this…no sense adding to it. It really sucks when people take advantage of nice people. I am one of those nice people who always try to see the best in people and then I get walked on. I feel bad for you and your hubby. Just be thankful it wasnt more than $20.

Bless his heart. Oh, dear. I guess chalk that $20 up for a small price to pay for lesson learned. Or something.

    Yup – been there.

And more than once. I just console myself with the knowledge that they obviously needed the money really bad…

Ugh, sorry to hear about the scam. I have to say my hubby is the same way. I think that is why I monitor what he does most of the time on the phone and at the door. Plus if something goes wrong I tend to be more of a. . . . well you know 😉

Make him fix the shingles himself and then kill him. If you kill him now, you’ll eventually have to use some of the life insurance money to have the shingles fixed.

    On no!

My dh is no good at saying no either – when a telemarketing person phones I don’t even let them draw breath, just speak over them, politely say we are not interested in whatever, and put the phone down. My dh listens politely for ever! Fortunately he has yet to pay over any money, but it is only a matter of time!

Oh Dear 🙂 I can sympathise though. I cringe whenever my hubby answers the door and it’s a salesmen. So far we donate to more charities than I can count because he just can’t say no 🙁
