These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things

The upcoming holiday season can be a hectic time, to say the very least. I personally have found that in the past, I have rushed around, sacrificed sleep, and mentally exhausted myself trying to make everything about this special time of the year “just perfect”. It took me a couple of years to realize that by not being IN the moment during the holidays, I was missing out on the best parts of the season. Taking time out for some comforting moments of my own in the midst of all the seasonal preparations is important for me because it not only rejuvenates me to keep going, but it also helps me be a better “everything” to everyone I deal with on a daily basis.

One of my very favorite comfort items during the holiday season is a hot beverage.

Flavored coffees, hot chocolate, and spiced apple cider are always on hand when the weather turns cold. I enjoy my flavored coffees to get me caffeinated and going in the morning and reserve the hot chocolate and spiced apple cider for relaxing in the evening.

I also incorporate holiday scents into my home and in my personal beauty products during this time as much as possible. I’m a sucker for scented candles and room sprays in gingerbread, peppermint, and cranberry and I love hitting up the beauty specialty shops to find holiday scented bubble baths, lotions, and lip gloss. In my opinion, it’s not the holidays until it smells like the holidays!

Curling up in my ridiculously soft pink fleece blanket and watching holiday movies on television with my son and husband is also one of my most favorite ways to find a little comfort and decompress after a busy day of work. Throw in some popcorn and one of those hot holiday beverages I mentioned above and my couch becomes my own little slice of holiday happiness.

While these creature comforts mentioned above are indeed some of the little things I look forward to during this time of year, the most comforting thing of all is knowing that, for 37 years (that would be my entire life) and even before my time, my family has held on to the same traditions that make our holidays special. I’ve never known a year of my entire life without Thanksgiving dinner at my aunt’s and my maternal grandmother’s houses, a year when my own parents didn’t hold their annual Christmas Eve breakfast (for BOTH sides of our family), a year when we didn’t open gifts on Christmas Eve night at my aunt’s and grandmother’s houses, or a Christmas morning that Santa ever forgot. Since having a child, I’ve come to realize just by seeing the holidays through his eyes that all of the reasons we celebrate the season and the people we share it with are the things that feel the most comfortable to me. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
