Slowing down to enjoy our summer was my main goal this year. The end of the school year for me stretched right into June because we had to make up several workdays because of snow earlier this year. I thought that day would never come! I was so glad to see the end of this school year, and not because it was bad, but because the end of the year got really hectic. There was state testing, my son graduating 6th grade, a book fair, library evaluation, and end of the year activities at work. I’ve neglected this blog pretty badly this year and I thought I’d try to get back on track and catch everyone up on what we’ve been up to.
May was fantastic and crazy. My son graduated 6th grade from his elementary school that he attended since he was three years old. We had been waiting for this special day for a long, long time. He got several awards at Awards Day, and we were so excited about him winning the DAR Essay Contest for our county. His essay placed third in the state of Mississippi. This was such a cool thing because I won the DAR Essay Contest when I was his age over thirty-something years ago. Doesn’t seem like it has been that long! Our son has really worked hard and had a good attitude all through the years at this school and I’m so thankful for all of the faculty and staff that had a hand in educating him and looking after him there. We will certainly miss them, but he’s got to move along to junior high. I still can’t believe it is time for this!
June and July have been purposefully slow for us. Last summer I was so determined to gain my strength back after my heart surgery that I really threw myself into yard work and housework nonstop to prove that I was perfectly fine. I’ve finally come to the conclusion that I have nothing to prove. I feel better, so I’m taking time to enjoy summer and pack in some things that make me happy. We won’t talk about how happy ice cream sandwiches have made me this summer. Ahem.
We’ve taken lots of naps. We’ve read lots of books. We’ve gone to the local ice cream shop and visited the thrift and consignment stores on a weekly basis. We’ve also visited the duck pond near our home to feed the ducks. The stray cats in our backyard have had a couple of litters of kittens and we love watching their antics on our patio each day.
Joe and I celebrated our 19th anniversary on July 3. We look like kids in our wedding pictures.
We decided to hit up a local restaurant that has absolutely amazing steaks. The margarita was pretty good, too.
You’re probably just dying to know what we got each other for anniversary gifts, right? Well, feast your eyes, people!!
Nothing says I love you and I’m in it for the long haul quite like a new air conditioner, right? Unfortunately, our whole air conditioner system completely died a few days before our anniversary, so we had to get it replaced and now we joke that this is our gift to one another.
The kid attended a pool party recently for the incoming 7th graders at his new school to get to know each other a little before school starts. He had fun and it was fun to get to meet the other new parents.
So now I’m kind of in denial that my baby is starting 7th grade in a couple of weeks and I only have a week and a half left of summer before I go back to work as well. We’re in the thick of school supply and uniform shopping. My plan is to really get it all together this week. Let’s hope! This is how we enjoy summer around our house.
