I can’t believe the last time I posted to my blog was in July! I can remember when I first started blogging and I couldn’t wait to post every single day. I was also a stay-at-home mom at the time and blogging was my therapy I think. Ha! I still think of a million things to blog about but actually sitting down and getting those thoughts out is a different story. On to the updates…
August
August was a whirlwind. Getting everything ready to start back to work and school is time-consuming. I made it three days into work and I was sent home for being exposed in close contact with a coworker that tested positive for the virus. I had to wait a few days to be tested, and thankfully my test was negative. It was strange being at home and not being sick. However, I did enjoy being able to take my son to school and pick him up in the afternoon. My mom usually does that. I guess it gave her a nice break to be lazy in the morning if she wanted.
Work is going well, but we have dealt with student and staff positive cases of the virus. I just wear my mask and wash my hands and spray Lysol and wipe down surfaces allllll day long. I’m doing all that I can to stay safe and keep my room safe for others. I stay in my room and really only leave it to go to the restroom. I don’t even see my co-workers as much as I used to.
Stocking Up
I normally use the grocery pick-up service from Walmart each Friday to get our groceries for the week, but hubby and I did venture into Walmart about three weeks ago to pick up a few things. I honestly don’t go anywhere unless it’s to work or my mom’s house, so getting out is a rare thing for me. There were just a few particular things I wanted to look for, and I was pleasantly surprised to see the store was pretty well stocked. I do pay attention to what is going on and just from even reading others’ blogs, I can see supply chain issues going on all over the place. I knew it was becoming an issue when we had to replace our stove a couple of months ago, but in some places, finding certain items is becoming much harder. To that end, I have been stocking up on our everyday needs, such as toiletries, food, and health items.
I made sure to get extras of school supplies for my son. I’m making sure we all have extra socks and undergarments. I’m picking up a few extras each week with our grocery order. I’m very concerned with what I am reading in regards to shortages and I am also trying to make sure my friends and family know that they need to start preparing as well.
I have a family member who just went through Hurricane Ida and a week later it is still very difficult for her to find common grocery items (like bread), gas, and water. She lives in South Mississippi and didn’t take a direct hit, but she did lose electricity for a couple of days. Couple the storm with thousands of relief workers coming into the area to help (and thank the Lord for them!), and supplies become even more scarce. I sent her and another family member a couple of links I think are really important.
I love this 52 Week Food Storage Checklist because it helps you build a pantry for minimal cost by just purchasing a few items each week. This is great if you are on a limited income and can’t afford to go out and spend a lot of money buying tons of items all at once. It’s a slower process, but slow and steady wins the race. Even if you can afford to buy in bulk, it’s also a great reminder to pick up a few things each week anyway.
I also think having a plan for emergencies is so important and this printable Emergency Binder (scroll all the way to the bottom of the blog and click on the emergency binder icon) can help you get everything together and in one place for when things happen unexpectedly. You never know when you might be confronted with wildfires, earthquakes, flooding, hurricanes, biohazards, health scares, or even civil unrest. This free printable can really help you be better prepared for anything.
Hurricane Ida
Even living almost 300 miles from the Gulf Coast, a major hurricane can still cause issues for us in the Mississippi Delta. When Katrina hit we lost power for several hours and the winds were enough to bring down trees here. I was relieved when our school was canceled for the day so I could be home. It floods really bad in the town I work in and I was concerned that getting home might become a problem. Fortunately, the only issue we had was high winds. It knocked a pretty big limb down from a tree in our back yard and just made a mess of things with smaller branches coming down.
Hubby was able to get to this huge limb and chop it up Saturday. The limb truck just ran and gathered them up.
Labor Day
Today has been a quiet Labor Day around the house. I was very glad to have the day off and spent most of it cleaning upstairs…dusting, vacuuming, and cleaning bathrooms. It’s an absolutely gorgeous day and doesn’t feel too bad at all in the shade. There’s been a steady breeze and I can almost feel Fall in the air. I’m looking forward to cooler temperatures for sure!
