Reading and Watching Lately

I thought I would share what I have been reading and watching lately.  I started sharing this last year, and it fizzled out.  But I’m trying to do better about that this year.  I always like to see what other people are reading and watching.  It gives me some ideas, and one of the books I read this month was a recommendation from another blogger!

glasses and book

Reading

I read two books during January.  The first one was Culture Warrior by Bill O’Reilly.  I get that people have their own opinions about O’Reilly.  This book belonged to my daddy, and I had brought it home many years ago, intending to read it.   It deals with ideals and politics in our country through the lens of secular progressives vs. traditionalists.

It was interesting to read this book so many years after its publication in 2006.  Some topics and people mentioned in the book didn’t age well, but O’Reilly hit the nail on the head on some things.

The other book I read, which I absolutely loved and highly recommend, is Hey, Hun by Emily Lynn Paulson.  If you’ve ever had a friend try to get you to join an MLM, bought products from someone in an MLM, or ever belonged to one, boy, this book was an eye-opener!  It deals with the author’s rise to the top of the MLM company she joined and how she finally let go of it all to save herself and her family.  This was such a great read!

Watching

the swans

I usually don’t watch very much regular TV.  I like to watch the people I follow on YouTube, but that’s it.  However, I was very excited to see that the first episode of “The Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” was available to watch.  I read a book called The Swans of Fifth Avenue a few years back about Truman Capote and his friendship and ultimate betrayal of his handful of beautiful New York socialites.

I loved the book, but y’all…this show is something else!  I’m not a prude by any means, but the sexuality in this show is downright raunchy and just unnecessary.  I made it through the first episode but won’t be watching anymore.  I’m sure most of it is true, but it was just too much information for me.  This show is not based on the actual book I read, but I sure thought it would be as tame as that book.  It’s not.  It’s a shame because, besides the nasty sex scenes, it was fine otherwise.

So, that’s what I have been reading and watching lately.  I’m already well into another book this month.  Have you read or watched anything lately you would recommend?

I find that so much of what is out there to watch these days follows the pattern you mentioned. Even if it starts out well it goes south. Can’t they realize we want some good old fashioned comedy and drama without the other?

Hi! Thank you for the heads-up on The Swans. I will pass on it. I hate it when they do that. Oppenheimer was the same. It was a great movie with one completely unnecessary scene. Thanks, my friend!

They have been promoting the Swans heavily, and I thought it sounded interesting. However, I don’t think I’d enjoy it any more than you did. I haven’t read the book, so I think I’ll start there.

Bummer, I saw the ad for The Swans and thought it looked interesting, especially since I like reality based books/ shows and I am familiar with the story. However, like you said, I’m no prude, but lately I think some of the scenes they throw in these shows and movies are just too graphic and unnecessary. Thanks for the preview. I won’t waste my time.
