The Hunt: 11 Days Of Doing

Posted on July 17, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

The Hunt with Sponsors2-01

Are you looking to do a little good this summer?  DoSomething.org, the nation’s largest organization for teens and social change, has partnered with Lenovo, the world’s second largest PC maker who helped found the campaign last year, and Bing, the search engine from Microsoft, to launch “The Hunt: 11 Days of Doing”(http://www.dosomething.org/hunt). It will run through July 20. Each day DoSomething.org releases three challenges  at 11:11 Am EST on the web, text, and and email for people to complete. All of the challenges take no longer than an hour.

These are just a few examples of some of the past days’ challenges:

Search for “HOMELESS ANIMALS IN US” on Bing to find an animal homelessness stat. Raise awareness by sharing it on Facebook.

Go meat free for the day. Send in pictures of what you and your teammates ate instead!

Find 3 household items to donate to your local animal shelter. (Need help finding the closest shelter? Use Bing to help locate it!)

Do you have an hour to spare to help do some good?  If so, sign your family up and help make some small changes that add up in big ways.  I hope you will join me over the next three days as I share some of the challenges my family and I will be doing together and our results.

I am participating in a paid campaign through Mom Bloggers For Social Good.  All opinions are my own.

Kleenex Show Us Your Shield. Sneeze. Swish. Giveaway

Posted on July 16, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

shield sneeze swish

It’s almost time for kids to be heading back to school and Kleenex has developed a fun new routine on their Back To School website for making sure your kids keep their hands clean no matter where they are.  It’s called the Shield. Sneeze. Swish.  Take a look:

FACT:  According to a study by the University of Arizona, the average student’s hand has almost 1,500 more bacterial cells than commonly cleaned door handles and knobs. Doesn’t that make you want to run and wash your hands?  There’s almost no way of avoiding a sneeze, so help your kids keep their hands clean by arming them with Kleenex brand tissues with Sneeze Shield, a proprietary coating that helps to keep “stuff” in the tissue and off hands. With four convenient package shapes and sizes, mom can feel confident that her kids can use Sneeze Shield wherever they go.

2. Sneeze when you gotta!

3. Swish that Kleenex tissue right into the waste basket (two points!)

Want to see my son doing the Shield. Sneeze. Swish.?  Click here!

Legoland Discovery Center Dallas- Grapevine, Texas Review

Posted on July 16, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

legoland dallas

We had a couple of reasons for choosing to go to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area for our family getaway this year, and one of the main ones was to visit the Legoland Discovery Center in Grapevine, Texas.  Our son is a HUGE Lego fanatic and we wanted to give him the ultimate Lego experience.  I am so glad we did because I think I can safely say our whole family had a blast.

Legoland Discovery Center in Grapevine, Texas is located inside the Grapevine Mills mall.  We went on a Friday afternoon, so we did have to stand in line for about 20 minutes to be admitted.  Once we were in, Professor Brick-a-Brack gave us a short introduction to how Legos are made from plastic.

Once this demonstration was over, we headed into the heart of Legoland Discovery Center and spent almost three hours watching our son play his heart out.  I think he spent the most time inside the Lego City Fire Academy.

We all agreed that the 4D Cinema short movie was the best!  I had never experienced a 3D movie, much less one in 4D, so this was so much fun!  If you go, be prepared…it involves a little wind and water (think sprinkles like rain), but it is SO worth it!

My husband and I were enthralled with MINILAND, a city on a miniature scale made completely of Legos.

We had a snack in the café.  They had the usual foods that all kids love (pizza, hot dogs, etc.), but they also had some healthier food choices.  As with buying food at any attraction, you will pay for convenience, so I would recommend taking along some extra cash if you plan to purchase snacks.

When we finally succumbed to exhaustion and decided it was time to leave, we knew there was only one thing left to do.  Shop for Legos!  The only way out of Legoland is through the gift shop, so of course we spent a good thirty minutes in there.  There was so much color and all the Lego sets you could imagine.

E.B. had saved up quite a bit of money in his piggy bank before the trip, so we matched it and he ended up leaving with quite a haul!

We went back to the mall the next day and we bumped into the Lego man himself!

This was the most fun we have had as a family in a long time, and the look on my son’s face as he played, discovered, and built at Legoland Discovery Center was absolutely priceless.  The facility was clean and the staff was helpful and friendly.  I am so glad we decided to go because we made a ton of great memories!

My family and I were graciously provided with three complimentary tickets to Legoland.  No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own.

national tequila day

Raise your hand if you love margaritas!  Yep, me too!  There’s no better beverage to pair with a great Mexican dish.  This month, you don’t have to look hard for the perfect excuse to go and enjoy a margarita with your friends.  National Tequila Day is on July 24, and Chevys Fresh Mex, a national border cantina-style Mexican restaurant chain, shares their top five ways to celebrate!

1. Throw a Tequila Olympics party complete with a flaming margarita torch and games like bobbing for limes in a tub of margarita mix, a tequila worm dance contest, “margarita pong” with tequila and limes, and shimmying under a limbo stick while holding a frosty margarita.

2. Stop by for your favorite tequila drink specials at Chevys Fresh Mex participating locations on July 24 including the 1800 Margarita (House or Fresh Fruit); Cazadores Blanco, Herradura Silver, El Jimador Reposado shots; and Paloma, Red Paloma or any flavor Tequini.

3. Mix up a batch of Chevys luscious fresh fruit margaritas to celebrate with America’s favorite cocktail (see recipe below for the 1800 Watermelon Margarita!)

4. Sample seasonal tequila-themed menu items like Chef Carlos’ Flaming Tequila Chicken Fajitas or new fresh, summer-inspired flavors like Habanero Grilled Steak Tacos, mesquite-grilled Carne Asada and Shrimp Skewers and citrus-infused Ceviche Mixto at Chevys Fresh Mex participating locations.

5. Choose five different types of tequila and host a blind-folded tequila taste test in classic shot glasses. Don’t forget a palate cleanser of chips and salsa!

·        Build: Fill a shaker glass half way with cubed ice. Add all ingredients as listed. Hand shake vigorously 5 times. Pour entire contents into a 12 oz. old fashion glass. Garnish with a watermelon sugar rim and lime wheel, then serve cold!

Celebrate At Chevys Fresh Mex

This month Chevys is kicking off the celebration on July 20 by inviting guests to sample fresh, seasonal tequila-themed menu items paired with free-flowing margaritas, America’s most popular cocktail. Chef Carlos’ Flaming Tequila Chicken Fajitas, which is served tableside and set ablaze, may be paired with premium 1800 Watermelon Margarita for $17.99. On July 24, the national restaurant chain honors National Tequila Day by offering guests’ favorite tequila drink specials including:

1800 Margarita (House or Fresh Fruit) for $5
Cazadores Blanco, Herradura Silver, El Jimador Reposado shots for $6
Paloma or Red Paloma, or any flavor Tequini for $7

Chevys will also bring back the popular $5 Watermelon Margarita, the latest libation in the Fresh Fruit Margaritas of Month series, as the “fresh” border cantina chain celebrates its monthly Cinco party on July 5. Our Totally Sick Summer Vacation

Posted on July 15, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

I will be sharing some posts about our family vacation this week, but I thought I’d start out by sharing this:

WP_003641

My sweet baby got sick the night before we were to leave for Texas.  Picture it:  fresh clean sheets on the bed, all bags packed, everyone getting their rest before getting up early for traveling the next morning, and then…E.B. wakes up puking around midnight.  It seemed as if he couldn’t stop getting sick, so we decided to take him in to the ER to get checked out.  His blood work came back ok and it was assumed he probably had a little stomach bug or ate something that didn’t agree with him.  However, he had to get stuck and it literally broke my heart having to help restrain him so they could insert the needle to take his blood.  He also cried to us, apologizing for getting sick before the trip.  Our poor baby thought he had ruined our vacation, which made me only more teary-eyed.  We assured him that the trip could wait until he felt much better and praised him for being such a brave boy.  After we got the all clear and some Zofran, we headed home.  I stayed up all night doing laundry (yay! Puke sheets!) and this is what made my heart smile:

WP_003650

Our sweet cat Pearl kept watch over E.B. as he rested from his ER trip.  She’s such a sweet kitty, and her constant devotion to E.B. only proves that.

WP_003653

I’m proud to report E.B. woke up later the next morning and felt good enough to make the trip.  He slept a lot of the way, but that was ok.  By the time we got to Texas he was ready for some “real food” and in a great mood, feeling much better.

So, naturally as we made our way back home from Texas on Monday, who gets sick?  ME!  however, it’s nothing but a nasty sinus infection in which I finally, after enduring for 6 days, gave up and went to the clinic to get some relief.  As we prepared to drive over, E.B. gave me a tight hug before we got in the car and said, “Well, Mom….be brave!”.  I was brave and got my shot and am starting to feel a little better.  Except, there was Decadron in the shot, and now all I want to do is eat the whole house.

Diamond Candles- A Ring In Every Candle

Posted on July 13, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

diamond candle

If you are a big fan of candles like I am, you might be lucky to be able to use the votive or jar your candle came in again to repurpose it for something else.  What if I told you that there is a candle you can use, enjoy, and actually get a ring from that might be worth $10, $100, $1000, or $5000?  Yes, a ring! It’s called a Diamond Candle. Take a look here:

Naturally, I was very intrigued when I heard about Diamond Candles, so I just had to try one out for myself.  The candle I received was a Pomegranate Lemonade soy candle and it smelled amazing and true to description.  All Diamond Candles are made with 100% soy wax and the quality is top notch.

2012_0619weddingj0034

I was so excited about the ring inside the candle that I immediately lit my candle as soon as it arrived.  It took a few days, but it finally burned down to where I could see the foil wrapper containing the ring that is located to the side.

2012_0619weddingj0044

Yes, I dug that foil wrapper out as soon as I could easily get to it and this is what was inside my candle:

WP_003532

Beautiful, right?  I’m pretty sure it is worth less than $100, but it’s still pretty and definitely a ring I can wear anytime!  See?  Isn’t that better than any ordinary candle?

You will definitely want to follow Diamond Candle’s Facebook page because they offer specials and giveaways all the time.  If you are looking for a fabulous smelling candle with a little “something extra”, look no further than Diamond Candles.

I received this candle to review.  No other form of compensation was received.

We Felt Like Royalty At Embassy Suites!

Posted on July 12, 2012January 10, 2016 by Mandy

In the heart of Grapevine, Texas, the Embassy Suites DFW Airport North Outdoor World towers over the city and is definitely tops in service.  My family and I just experienced an incredible night’s stay and we literally hated to leave.

When we stepped into the doors of the hotel, we were greeted by the friendly front desk manager.  She was so welcoming, got us all checked in, and then she informed us that we had been chosen as “Guests of the Day” and immediately upgraded our room to a Penthouse Suite.  Naturally, this excited us to no end!  Our room was located on the 12th floor, which excited my son to no end, because he had already been asking before we checked in if we could stay “all the way at the top”.  He loves elevators and heights.

The lobby itself was amazing. I think I could have spent all day just sitting there taking it all in.  There were fountains, a gift shop, areas for dining and visiting, and even a coffee bar!

2012_0709Texas0493

Our room was equally impressive.  When we walked into our suite, we heard classical music playing from the bedside alarm clock.  Our suite had a living area, a bedroom, a full bath, and a half bath.

2012_0709Texas0307

Our room had a king sized bed, perfect for the three of us.

2012_0709Texas0322

There was also a wet bar with a microwave, refrigerator, sink, and coffee maker.  The coffee maker was fabulous!  Complimentary coffee was provided.  The half bath was spacious and definitely appreciated.  We never fought over the bathroom once!

2012_0709Texas03132012_0709Texas0316

The master bathroom was heavenly.  Everything was clean, the towels were crisply folded and plush, the toiletries were by Crabtree & Evelyn (love!), and the tub had jets.  However, the thing that impressed us most about this big bathroom was that it had a TV!  My son, of course, thought this was THE best.

2012_0709Texas03282012_0709Texas0331
2012_0709Texas03382012_0709Texas0398
We also had a private patio with an incredible view of the city below.

There were two 32-inch flat-screen televisions in our suite and my son enjoyed watching a movie on demand, compliments of the manager.  He also fell asleep on the sofa. Had we needed the extra sleeping room, the sofa would have made out into a sleeper bed.

2012_0709Texas0447

We all slept very comfortably.  The mattress was perfect, the sheets were cool and crisp (just the way I like them), and extra pillows were provided in case we needed them.

The next morning, we headed downstairs to enjoy a complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast.  This is well worth getting up for because any breakfast food you could possibly want was available.  My son was especially excited about the fresh fruit!

2012_0709Texas0475

After breakfast, we checked out the fitness room and my husband tried out the weights.  We also checked out the pool area (and met the super nice man who takes care of the pool) and just looked around more before it was time to leave.

We hate that we had to miss out on the manager’s reception the evening we arrived there (complimentary drinks and appetizers), but we went to a baseball game, so we had to leave early for that.

Our stay at Embassy Suites DFW Airport North Outdoor World was absolutely incredible and should you find yourself in the area and need a hotel, you really needn’t look any further.  No attention to small detail was overlooked, and those small details are just the kind of things that make staying here extra special.  We were treated like absolute royalty from the moment we walked through the doors until we pulled away from the hotel to drive back home.  Everyone (managers, housekeeping, the valet parking service, cooks, doormen, and other hotel employees) we had contact with went above and beyond to make us feel absolutely welcomed and comfortable and we thank them so much for their hospitality and excellent service.  They also went out of their way to make my son feel comfortable, and even though this hotel looks very nice, I can assure you it is also very kid-friendly.  I can honestly say our family has never felt so spoiled while staying away from home.

GetMore_lockup_VERT

There’s still time to enter Embassy Suite’s Get More Vacation Contest! Upload your family’s “vacation face” photo with a caption explaining how your family plans to get the most out of your summer vacation – before, during and after.  Enter on the Embassy Suites Facebook page by July 20, 2012 for your chance to win!

I wrote this review while participating in an Ambassador Program by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Embassy Suites Hotels and received a one-night complimentary stay at an Embassy Suites Hotel to facilitate my reviews and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.
