We had one “hail” of a storm Friday evening! I’m still in disbelief of what I witnessed with my own eyes, but also so thankful that it wasn’t any worse. We could hear rumbles of thunder, but the storm looked to be north of us. I went outside to pull my car under the carport because I always worry about the wind knocking down tree branches and things like that. Hubby still had his truck parked right outside the carport, and I asked him if he wanted me to pull it in, but he said no. A few minutes later I realized I had missed a phone call from my mom. I called her back and she was in her hallway and screaming at me that it was hailing really bad and that she had lost electricity, and for us to PLEASE get in our safe place. She lives only a few blocks away from us About that time I heard some little *PING* sounds on our windows. I yelled for hubby to get his truck in the carport, and as soon as he ran outside it started hailing. But then. BUT THEN….
Y’all. It sounded like our home was under attack. Hail was slamming into every window on our house from all directions at a very high speed. It was like someone was literally throwing baseballs at our windows. Of course, hubby and I just HAD to take a quick look to see what was happening. It was hail the size of golf balls, tennis balls, and baseballs. I just knew we were going to have some busted windows. It lasted for several minutes and I was terrified that a tornado was probably right on it’s heels. Thankfully, it wasn’t, and when it was finally over, I walked outside and picked up this:
I have never in my life seen hail this big. It was bigger than an egg and at least two-three inches thick. I wish I had thought to measure it. Our entire yard was littered with this. We did a walk around the house to check for damage and from what we can tell, it looks like we have some minor siding/roof damage.
Several of our neighbors have busted out windshields and windows in their home. There is a lot of damage around town. My mom was without electricity for a few hours, but it was restored close to midnight. She didn’t have any damage, thank goodness.
In all, we were so very fortunate we didn’t have as much damage as some others have. I am now officially schooled about hail storms and how they can turn really bad, really fast. I just hope I never have to witness that again!
