It’s a late post! SO, I meant to post this on Wednesday, but life happened, and here we are! I keep thinking each week that surely things will slow down a little and I’ll post more regularly, but nope! It just gets crazier and crazier! Ha!
A Bust
Well, Monday was a bust as far as getting anything accomplished. I just have these days where it literally feels like I’m in a daze and can’t function. Even the TV couldn’t hold my attention. It was like I felt like I needed to be UP and doing something, but getting absolutely nothing accomplished. My brain would skip to the next thing, which went on a loop all day. I don’t know why I get like this sometimes. I hate it because I like feeling productive and accomplishing something each day.
Back In Gear
Tuesday was better. I was able to do more in spurts. I vacuumed, hung up clothes, loaded the dishwasher, and mopped the kitchen and dining room. The other day, I listened to a podcast about deliberately moving at a slower pace and how working yourself into such a frenzy is bad for you. Obviously. Haha! Not that I don’t move slowly as it is when it comes to housework, but I have been trying to slow down while working. I didn’t realize how hard and fast I scrubbed dishes or how fast I was folding clothes so I could move on to the next thing. When I hear the words “slow down,” I equate it to mean stop doing things, but I realize that it means just that…slow down and do one thing at a time. I’m working on it!
Decision Time
After his college tour visits on Monday, the Teen has decided to attend the junior college about thirty minutes away. He wants to be a welder and possibly an auto mechanic, and they offer both advanced technical programs. He will have a little commute each day as he doesn’t want to stay on campus, but we will have to wait and see what his class schedule looks like. We hope that with his fantastic ACT score, he will be offered some sort of scholarship. We have several to apply for, but we have to wait for his final high school transcript in a few weeks.
I always thought he would go into computers or something like that, but he has always loved working with his hands, and I have no doubt he can be as successful as he wants to be with either of these programs. I’m glad that more high schools are beginning to encourage technical and vocational programs. There is such a need out there for skilled workers.

Always a good idea to pursue what you enjoy doing and we do need good, skilled workers. i hope your son will qualify for scholarships to help with the tuition.

Hooray for the teen! I think that’s a great idea. I’m also glad that they are now encouraging more tech training. I’ve seen so many that come out of college with lots of debt and then can’t find a job in that line. In the meantime, we need more skilled worker and they do well in pay!

Thank you! Yes, our dream for him is to come out of college debt-free. So many start out with crippling debt that they have to pay on for years. Ask me how I know! Haha!

That’s amazing for your son!! Congratulations!! Senior year is so hard, so many decisions and so much pressure. It feels good for everyone, when they decide on a path and are excited about it. Fingers crossed for the scholarships! They are so helpful!
Mandy says
Thanks, Kim! We’d love for him to come out of his college experience debt-free! It’s a major goal for us!

Yes. Yes. Yes. I am so happy for your son! And I agree. I think the tide is turning away from the ultra-competitive must-go-to-college phase. We so desperately need people in the vocational realm. Young people can have a career doing something they enjoy, make a lot of money, and not be saddled with tremendous debt. I’m so excited for you all, my friend.
Mandy says
Thank you so much! Yes, the world really does need more skilled workers. I’m glad to see more high schools realizing this and exposing kids to all avenues for choosing what they want to do in life. It’s so important!

Amen to more technical programs coming back. I pushed and pushed college and my son hated it. He has had to struggle because I didn’t let him just do what was best for him. Lesson learned and he is happy now.
I always hear about scholarships on Mike Rowe’s podcasts. The Dirty Job guy. Might be a place to look.
I used to overdo it and then have to lay down the entire next day for being the hare instead of tortoise. I now break my chores up to a little each day. I do much better that way.

I’m glad your son found what he wants to do. It’s so hard to make those choices when you are only 17/18. I did look into that scholarship and I think we may have missed the deadline. But, I’ll keep it in mind for sure because I think you can apply even if you are already in college, so that might help his second year in! And yep, I overdid it Monday and today has just been no good. I’ve got to learn to not be so rushed to get things done.

Our society encourages a fast pace for everything, making it hard to make the mental shift to slow down. Good for you for trying. I agree that there is a great need for people who work with their hands, and I’m glad your son is one of them.

Thank you! Yes, I’m glad to see more schools showing kids ALL options. Not everyone is interested in a four year college degree, and that’s ok.
