How can you eat healthy on a small budget?  It’s easy to get discouraged about eating healthier when you see the prices of produce and meat in the grocery store.  When you add in household items, it’s not hard to bust your budget at the grocery store.  Sometimes you can run across good deals on healthy food by using coupons, but often times those coupons don’t really save you any extra money.

Buy in Bulk- Split the Cost

If you want to eat healthy on a small budget, consider buying in bulk and splitting the cost with a friend. Perhaps you and your friend both use the same grocery or household items. Most of the time, when you break down the cost, it’s cheaper to buy more at once. This is especially true of meat.

Look for the Markdowns

Stores usually mark down produce and meats in the morning, especially on Monday. Get to your store early and see if any of these items have been marked down. You might worry that you won’t use what you buy before it ruins. Consider freezing, canning, and dehydrating to preserve these foods for later.  Preserving is a great way to eat healthy on a small budget and build up food storage.

Shop Ethnic Grocery Stores

Often times foods and spices are cheaper at ethnic grocery stores. Not only that, but you will probably be able to find a better variety of the specific food items they sell and discover even more things you like.

Shop Local

If you are fortunate to live where there is a farmer’s market or small produce store, check them out!  Not only are these products fresh and locally grown, often times you don’t have to pay an extra markup in price for packaging.

To eat healthy on a small budget, it just takes a little extra effort.  However, the payoff of nutritious food while staying on a budget is absolutely worth it.
