A few days ago I discovered a hidden vintage house secret in our home. When we bought this house I could tell that someone had painted over the sink/vanity area in our master bath. It’s painted a dark grey and I always had it in my mind that we would tear all of this out and update it someday. It’s very dated (our home was built in 1968) and one of the sinks is showing a rust spot now.
Anyway, I was wiping down the countertop near my husband’s sink when I noticed the paint had started to peel a little. I touched the spot and kind of picked at it with my fingernail and all of a sudden I saw a little pattern underneath! Naturally, I had to find out exactly what it was, so I kept scraping a little more and underneath this terrible paint job is a beautiful vintage tiny flower pattern!
Now, I know this pattern is a little dated, but it sure looks so much better than this awful dark grey paint that’s over it. It looks like it’s some sort of vintage Formica. I can remember my mom and dad having this in our bathroom at home when I was growing up before they upgraded it. The pattern looked more like this.
So now I want nothing more than to scrape all of this ugly paint off and see our sink area with this original finish! However, I can’t see if it’s worth it to spend days and days scraping all of this paint. I’m afraid I would ruin it or maybe there is a reason it was painted over…maybe there is a really bad spot somewhere.
In any case, it sure was a neat find to our interestingly built house!

What an awesome find. Just think of it this way, if you peel it all off and there is a bad spot, nothing is stopping you from repainting it again with a color of your choosing. I say go for it and see what it all looks like.

You’re right! I just may do that while I’m off this summer! It’s just such a cute little pattern. I love finding stuff like this!

Maybe you can apply something to help soften the paint so it can be scraped off more easily. If there is a reason why it was painted over, then, you can paint again, with a more pleasing color.
Hope you are feeling better after your recent flu (previous post).
Thank you, for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment.

I will definitely be looking into what might help me get this paint off. I just love original detail in a home. I am feeling a little better, but trying to take it easy this weekend. Thanks so much for stopping in!

What a really cool find. Now I’m curious too…I think I would have to keep peeling!! Keep us posted.
