Greetings from the money pit! When it rains, it pours, and July certainly has been “one of those months” so far.

It Bees That Way Sometimes

The first of our woes started with bees.  Every single summer we have lived in this house, except one year, we have had a problem with bees wanting to start their hive in the front window of our home.  We’ve had the exterminator out once before, and that seemed to help for that summer.  I mostly just ignored them last summer, and they suddenly disappeared one day.  However, they were back with a vengeance this year, and I decided I was sick and tired of being unable to access the water hose in my front yard for fear of getting stung.

The bee man showed up last Friday afternoon and worked his magic.  We watched from the safety and comfort of our air-conditioned home and thanked him profusely when he left. Boom!  Got THAT taken care of!

Keeping Cool and Dry

And speaking of the air conditioner, it was also on the day the bee man came that we discovered we had a wet spot on the carpet near the closet that houses our air conditioner.  I opened the closet door, and the floor was wet inside.  I called our super awesome air conditioner man, who arrived shortly after the bee man left.  He could see that a drain inside was backed up a little, so he took care of that and serviced our AC unit outside.  I was super grateful because all of this was happening in the middle of our awful heat wave in which the real feel temperatures outside were at 115 degrees.  Then, a few days later, we noticed wet carpet again, and the AC man returned.  He couldn’t see anything happening with the unit but sucked up the little water puddle in the closet.  Finally, all seemed well.

Up On The Housetop

I also met with the insurance adjuster, who came out yesterday to check out the damage we had from the freak hail storm we had a couple of weeks ago.

big hail

He was super nice, and he and his assistant did their thing and then informed me, much to my shock and horror, that we needed a completely new roof on our home, over the carport, and also over the detached carport on our home.  Say WHAT?!? I could see that we had damage down the side of our gambrel-style roof, but I had no idea it was so bad because I obviously couldn’t climb our two-story home and see for myself. It was a big surprise because we just had the roof replaced about five years ago.  So now, I get to call around and get quotes from roofers.  Joy!

But Wait! There’s More!

As the nice insurance adjustor man left, I walked back up the driveway, and my gaze fell on the front window of our home.  The bees missed their spot so much they returned. Are you kidding me?!  Feeling frustrated, I walked back into my house, stepping on, yet again, a fresh wet spot on the carpet.  Obviously, this isn’t the air conditioner causing this.  I don’t even want to imagine what’s wrong, but I suppose my next phone call will be to the plumber. The one that’s still trying to figure out how we need to proceed on another plumbing repair from a few months ago that will likely involve taking a chunk out of our patio to reach a pipe sometime in the near future.  They found a workaround for that issue for now, but it’s still an issue.

Calgon….

I’m trying so hard to turn my “stinking thinking” around like my Mama always taught me.

  • Bees aren’t the worst thing that could happen to my home.  I just need to call the bee man back.
  • I should be grateful I have air conditioning, and after the heat wave we just experienced, I am very grateful.  God bless our AC man!
  • There are plumbers to call…people that can help.  We will figure out where this source of leaking water is coming from.  I hope it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.  Good thing I have two arms and two legs.
  • So thankful we have insurance on our home to help when big expenses, like roof replacement, come up.

Hubby and I often joke that our home has been a big money pit since we moved in seven years ago.  We’ve definitely had our share of home repairs, but I guess it feels worse this time because so many things are happening quickly and all at once.

I suppose this, too, shall pass.

One would think that a new roof would last longer than 5 years! Hope the repairs are not too costly!

You’ve had a rough month expense wise. I hope the second half of the month is better for you.

Oh my! Your hail stone is more like a hail rock or softball! Makes my little marble sized hail look pitiful! Yes, you are having a whole parade of issues coming at you all at once. I know, home ownership feels like that quite often. Been there, done that, more than once. My heart goes out to you. Praying the plumbing/leak issue will not be a big issue. Yes, we just replaced our AC unit when it almost caught fire and we had smoke coming in our house during the night when we were sleeping. Thankfully, God sent a big loud thunder boom to wake us up in time! Praying for you to survive all these things. God is able. Hang in there.

Oh boy, been there. Last year we needed a new roof, a new fence, a new driveway, a new pool liner and a new patio. Everything failed at once, insurance didn’t cover any of it and our contractors were terrible….but as you said, there’s always a way to turn that stinking thinking around- I love that saying! I think I’m going to use it! Good luck and try not to stress, there’s a lot going on at your house!! Hope it all gets resolved soon!

Oh my. I have had to call a bee man before – they usually come all suited u and suck those babies up. Thankful for that. The plumbing issue – hope that is an easy fix. What a bummer.
Geesh on the roof – but hey- at least insurance will take care of it. It will be a bit messy for a couple days – but worth it. I have had 2 replaced for hail damage.
Good luck – hope this is the end of the bad news!

Thank you Cheryl! Yes, we definitely have had a lot going on over here. Haha! I was just hoping we’d get more mileage out of that roof. But yes, I am so grateful for insurance. Sounds like you’ve had your fair share of experience with freak hailstorms, too!
