I thought I’d share a few pictures of our new roof in progress. Boy, do we have a big mess going on here! I went upstairs yesterday afternoon to take a nap, and about 45 minutes later, I woke up hearing grinding and scratching sounds. I lay there wondering what in the world it could be, and then I suddenly realized that the roofers were here and they had started work! It’s almost 4 p.m. in the middle of the week! Yikes! When I looked out front, I saw a few ladders going up and the packages of roofing material being broken open. I could not believe my eyes!
Our Home Before
I wanted to document this process, so I thought I’d share a picture of where we are starting from. This is the front of our weird-looking house! Haha! I may have shared before that this house was built around 1968, and it has a few mid-century modern features inside that we loved. The outside is undoubtedly a little strange-looking. I can remember passing by this house when I was a child on our way to and from a nearby park and thinking how ugly it was! It certainly looked weird sitting among the typical houses that were down the same street. Back then (this would have been the early 80s), the house had a reddish brick outside, and the metal mansard roof part was brown.
By the time we bought this house eight years ago, the outside had been painted this cream color, and the metal roof was painted gray. It looked much better, but I always envisioned changing the colors up. It would be a big job to get this entire house painted. You can see that the paint on the metal had already started fading. We had to rely on power-washing services to clean off the dirt that would build up each year.
Then came the big hail storm. It was enough that it damaged the metal mansard roofing as well. The insurance company decided that part also needed replacing along with the top of the house roof and over the carport. And I know, the landscaping (or should I say, lack thereof) out front looks hideous. We pulled everything out of the front flower bed, and this was before the two bushes were trimmed. We can’t decide if we will pull up those two bushes or fill in with more. We won’t be doing anything until the roofing and painting are finished, but I promise we will get there!
New Roof In Progress
So, as of yesterday evening, this is where we are at.
We decided to go with a darker gray for the mansard metal. It’s called “Charcoal,” and I am praying that we chose well! It appears that it will blend well with the wood trim around our garage. If not, we will definitely have to do some repainting. I was really thinking of a darker brown, but I was afraid it might be “too much” since the metal is so prominent. I also wasn’t particularly crazy about the roofing company’s choice of brown shades. I also wanted to go a little darker because I think it will better hide dirt.
Mansard Metal Roof Pull Back
They also started pulling back a couple of the mansard metal roof parts. I’m interested to see what this all looks like underneath. Those dark, dirty areas are from that tree hanging above the roof. In the summer, the sap drips down. I am praying we can also get that tree removed or at least trimmed way back so it won’t be an issue.
The roofers worked until dark yesterday evening, but were back here ready for work right before the sun came up! I’ve already had two sweet neighbors offer me the use of their driveways to park my car while this is going on. I was so appreciative of that!
So, the new roof is in progress, and we have a HUGE mess going on here, but I’m so excited that work is finally underway. I think this will be a significant upgrade this house needs, and I will be documenting as much as possible!

Hello dear Friend!
Going through construction stuff is always a frustrating process. But so worth the results! Well, usually anyways,. Lol I pray it goes quickly for you and it’s exciting to see how it will all turn out. I think your house is so cool in its uniqueness. 🙂
Blessings on your week ahead. xoxo

Thanks, Carrie! It’s definitely a weird looking house! Haha! And yes, it’s been a journey for sure!

I hope everything goes well with the new roof! I think that mid-century houses have a lot of features that I like. The house we currently live in is 70 years old. We are looking to move from here in a couple of years and we want to get something built in the 1970s or 1980s because we just like that style. You really had a lot of damage from the hail, so I am glad you are getting this important repair taken care of. Have a good week!
Mandy says
Thanks, Deb. I am so grateful we can get these repairs done as well. It’s been a big job for sure!

I would love to have a metal roof during the rain. The new roof is going to look great!

It does sound pretty good when it rains, Lisa! Very soothing!

Mandy, I really enjoy seeing the photos and reading this blog about your house. We’re not familiar with this type of roof covering here. I imagine that when it rains, you can hear it quite clearly inside, right? Is it like that? In the Netherlands, many houses have gable roofs with a minimum slope of 15 degrees. This type of roof is popular for its simple and traditional look, and roof tiles are commonly used as the roofing material
Are you still coping with the mess now?
I wish you a wonderful week ahead.
Mandy says
Hey Aritha! Yes, we are still in the thick of it here. But, it’s coming along so good! And it does sound so comforting when it rains! This isn’t a very common style of roof here, either, at least where we live.
Linda says
I for one, love your home, smiles. Wishing you a beautiful week.
Mandy says
Thanks, Linda! We love it for the inside more than the outside. Haha! But maybe once this is done, we will love the outside as well!
Kim says
We replaced our roof last spring and it was a mess. It was a loud and unsettling day for sure.
Mandy says
Oh, Kim. It was just awful when the work really got going. I thought they were tearing down my whole entire house! Haha!
Marilyn says
That is exciting and this will feel like a new place!
Mandy says
Yes! We are so excited to see the finished product. It’s coming along well!
Mari says
This is exciting! A few years ago we put on a porch and a new roof. It was a mess – but so worth it! It’s going to look great!
Mandy says
I remember those posts, Mari! I know for sure I saw one! Yes, it will be so worth it when it’s all over.
Sandy says
I hope it all works out well. We may be in that mode in the next year and have no idea what color we will choose. For now we have orange tiles that are more mildewed which honestly lessens the bright orange. I am thinking something less noticeable will be nice. IT will be good to have it behind you.
Mandy says
Hey Sandy! It’s SO good to see a comment from you! I hope you will document your updates as well!
