Making the switch to clean beauty products wasn’t something I anticipated doing, but I recently ran across some articles about the hormonal effects of some of the personal products people use and the chemicals they contain. Something just suddenly clicked with me and made me wonder how “clean” the beauty products I use actually are. I’ll admit that aging skin has become a real concern for me. I’ve been on the hunt for skincare products that would at least help my skin look the best it can. I know there is no magical product to slow down and reverse aging. I’m also aware that beauty starts from within and what you put inside your body is just as important. However, I am a real sucker for beauty products. It just makes sense to question what exactly is in the everyday products I use on my body and whether or not there were better alternatives.
Are Your Beauty Products Clean?
I was listening to a podcast recently and the guest on the show mentioned the Think Dirty app. Now, before you get concerned…*ahem*…it’s not what you’re thinking! This app lets you scan the barcode of your beauty products and lets you know how clean (or good) it is for you and offers up a few better alternatives if your product is dirty and full of synthetic or harmful chemicals. I was pleasantly surprised to see the lipstick I use daily was ok, but a lot of the products I use on my face were not. I had received a few trial sized skincare products from previous purchases from Sephora, so I checked them to see if anything there would be a suitable alternative. I discovered that the sample of moisturizer from Fresh Cosmetics that I had was a clean pick! I decided to start there and give it a try.
Fresh Cosmetics Skincare review
Fresh Cosmetics promises that their products are free from parabens, MIT/MCI, formaldehyde and formaldehyde donors, BHA, phthalates, silicones D4 & D6, hydroquinone, triclosan, and triclocarban. I have no idea what a lot of these are, but they just sound awful!
I fell in love with how the Rose Deep Hydration Moisturizer made my skin feel so soft without feeling greasy. It also didn’t irritate my eyes overnight. It left my skin feeling calmed and soft to the touch. I definitely don’t recommend this as a primer, because once you add makeup over it (at least my foundation did this), it sort of feels crumbly. However, this is amazing for your nightly skincare routine or for going bare-faced.
Being so impressed with this, I naturally went hunting down reviews on all of their other products. I am definitely one who likes to try before I buy and commit to full-sized products I am not familiar with, so I decided to purchase the Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Skin Care Set from Sephora.
This set contains the following products:
– 1.60 oz/ 50 mL Rose Deep Hydration Moisturizer
– 3.30 oz/ 100 mL Rose Deep Hydration Toner
– 0.5 oz/ 15 mL Rose Face Mask
– 1.6 oz/ 50 mL Sugar Strawberry Exfoliating Face Wash
These are all exactly the products I would want for a skincare routine, so this set was perfect. Here’s what I think so far:
Rose Deep Hydration Moisturizer- Love this stuff. As I said before, not too greasy but keep in mind what I mentioned above.
Rose Deep Hydration Toner– Every review I read about this was glowing. Not only is this bottle of toner just pretty (it contains REAL rose petals inside!), but it left my skin feeling calm and clean. My skin didn’t even feel tacky or sticky after using this.
Rose Face Mask– This was probably my favorite. It was NOT what I was expecting when I opened the container. It has a brown tea color to it and it also has tiny crushed up rose petals. What’s so amazing about this is the smell. It is not a flowery, perfumey rose smell like most rose scented products. This actually smells like a rose you freshly picked yourself. And the scent is subtle, not overpowering. I left the mask on for 15 minutes and it literally sunk into my skin. You could almost forget you had this on.
Sugar Strawberry Exfoliating Face Wash– This sort of felt like I was rubbing melted sugar on my face. It was a little strange, but still ok. It didn’t really smell like strawberries (boo!), but it left my face feeling very clean. It was very gentle. You definitely don’t want to remove your eye makeup with this, but it left my face very moisturized and that’s saying a lot for a face wash.
Overall, I was pleased with this purchase. For a basic skincare routine, I think this is a great choice. I’m definitely interested in trying out a few more Fresh products that are specifically aimed at aging skin.
