When the new year rolled in you probably started making plans on how to enjoy and get the most out of your time with your family and friends in 2017. Maybe you’ve already planned your vacation for the summer. You might have plans to buy a home or start a family. New years and new beginnings can bring feelings of excitement and joy. It gives us something to look forward to and to anticipate. Nearly three months ago I was looking forward to the holidays and trying to decide how to decorate our new home when I very suddenly and unexpectedly had to have double bypass heart surgery at the age of 42. This was a life event I never imagined I would have to face, especially at my age. Naturally, as the new year rolled around I welcomed 2017 with a grateful heart on the mend and thankful to be alive to make more memories with my family and friends.
While unexpected emergencies related to heart disease is something you probably don’t give much thought about or even like to think about, being prepared to help someone in the event of that possibility can make you a heart hero! Did you know there is a heart attack every 42 seconds in the United States? Taking aspirin during a suspected heart attack can help save a life, but the problem is that there isn’t always aspirin around. This is where YOU can become a hero. Bayer Aspirin wants to turn every person into a potential hero with The Hero Smiths campaign.
Chances are, you know someone with the last name of Smith. You may live next door to them, work with them, or you might even be a Smith yourself. It’s a very common last name and Bayer has a theory that if every person with the last name of Smith carried aspirin with them wherever they go, fewer people might die from heart attacks. Even better? You don’t have to be a Smith to participate in this revolutionary idea! Simply visit the The Hero Smiths and watch the short video. Be sure to share it with your family and friends on your social networks. Then, take the pledge to carry aspirin with you wherever you go. It’s such a simple idea, but one that can make a huge impact in potentially helping save lives.
Now that I’m a heart patient, Bayer Aspirin has become a part of my daily regimen as prescribed by my own doctor, but in the event that someone near me might need aspirin during a suspected heart attack , they can count on me to have it readily available. It’s always in my purse and now that I will be returning to work soon, I’ll also have a bottle of it stored in my day bag. My surgery certainly prevented a heart related emergency waiting to happen in my case, and I’m thankful that I’m still around to enjoy the little moments in life that we often take for granted. It can all change in an instant, so take the pledge to carry aspirin with you no matter where you go. The life you save just might be your own.
In the event of a suspected heart attack, immediately call 9-1-1 and chew or crush and swallow aspirin as directed by a doctor.
