While You Were At Camp

What’s it like for a mom to have five whole days to herself with no kid around because the kid is at a day camp for the first time?  Allow me to share how my week has been.

Monday-  I walked my son in to camp and promptly found his group leader.  I deposited his lunch in the proper place and hung around for a few minutes making sure he was going to be ok with this.  I had already told him bye (but I did NOT kiss him in front of everyone), but five minutes later I walked over to tell him I was really leaving this time.  He replied, “You can go now, Mom!”.  OK, OK. After getting back into the car, I immediately called my husband, then my mom, to tell them how he “did” at drop off.  Yes, I did.  I spent the day cleaning and staying extremely busy because it was just too quiet without him around.  I stalked the camp’s Facebook page and happily clapped my hands when I spotted a picture of him.  Then I had to inspect him in each picture.  Did he look like he was having fun?  Had he made any friends? I hope he is drinking enough water and enjoying himself.  I couldn’t wait to go pick him up and hear about his day.  After seven long hours, it was finally time to pick him up.  He walked out to the car in a daze.  I asked him how it went, he told me it was fun.  Then he promptly fell asleep and slept for 2 hours.

Tuesday-  No walking the kid in this morning.  I dropped him off, called my husband to report on the drop-off,  and went over to my parent’s house to hang out with them to stay busy.  Went to lunch with my mom.    The afternoon seemed to drag by.  It was still too quiet without him here.  I took in a short nap.  I still stalked the camp Facebook page for pictures.  I shared pictures on my timeline.  Happily bounded into the car to go pick him up.  He wasn’t as tired this afternoon, so he told me more about his day on the way home.  Felt relieved that he had a great time. I think I can make it three more days.

Wednesday-  Dropped off the kid.  Called the husband.  Rinse, repeat.  Felt like being extremely lazy, so I finally relaxed a little.  I played Candy Crush.  I watched 80’s sitcoms.  And yes, I still stalked the camp Facebook page for picture updates.  And yes, I still couldn’t wait to pick him up and hear about his day.  Thinking I should probably lighten up (ya think?) and take advantage of my alone time for the remaining two days.

Thursday– Woohoo!  Dropped the kid off and called the husband .  Ate junk food.  Watched The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.  Blogged!  Curled up with our kitty Clyde and had a LONG nap.  Avoided chores.  Wondered to myself why I hadn’t been doing this all week.  What?  It’s time to go pick up the kid already?

Friday-  It’s the last day of camp.  Where did the week go?  I survived!  Now, to plan next summer’s camps…
