I’m a big fan of Fancy Nancy books! What’s not to love about an adorable little girl who marches to the best of her own little drum? From her fancy clothes to her fancy words, Fancy Nancy books are a must-have for the little girls in your life. (shh…..my little guy likes these books, too!)
Fancy Nancy and the Mermaid Ballet by Jane O’Conner tells the story of Fancy Nancy and her friend Bree who are so excited about the upcoming Deep Sea Dances ballet performance put on by their dance school. Nancy and Bree both hope to be chosen to be beautiful mermaids in the ballet, but instead, Nancy gets the part of a dull tree and Bree is an oyster. Can she rise to the occasion and make being even a tree glamorous? When things change right before the performance and Bree gets to be a mermaid, how does this leave Nancy feeling? Can she be happy for her friend?
I think this book has a fabulous lesson for children of ALL ages, and not just little girls. Dealing with feelings and disappointments in life are all part of the learning experience, and this book is a wonderful way to introduce that to children while not making them feel bad about how they feel. I think even as adults, we can all use that reminder!

I am a big fan of Fancy Nancy and so are my nieces. It sounds like this one, like many of them, has a great lesson without being preachy. Great conversation starter for parents and kids.
