What started as a conversation about why we brush our teeth before bed ended up with my son asking me out for a lunch date the other night, which at seven years old, is just precious to me. Of course, I paid, but I certainly don’t mind. I know there will come a day when going out to lunch with mom will not be a high priority on his list, so I will take these little opportunities to spend some quality time with him as often as possible.
And how was that lunch date? Well, it involved lots and lots and lots of talk about Minecraft (a video game) and lots and lots and lots of fighter jet sound effects. In other words, every girl’s dream! And of course, I listened as if this was the most fascinating conversation I had ever had the pleasure to partake in.
The truth is, I stink at understanding video games, am not very creative when it comes to building Legos, and can’t tell a Blackhawk helicopter from a Chinook most days. What I do know is that I am so blessed to be this little guy’s mom. He looks absolutely nothing like me (he is ALL daddy), but I can see he has that definite only child/fierce imagination thing going on that I had while growing up, and being around him makes me want to be that carefree again. I love how he approaches everyone and everything with an open heart, no preconceived notions whatsoever.
So, while my little guy talked on and on, I marveled at what an amazing gift he is and what in the world I ever did without him. And I was also a little sad. Because someday, some girl out there who is crazy about boys with cheese dip dribbling down their shirts who can make cool sound effects while talking circles around them about video games is going to come along and steal his heart. *sniff*

Awww what a sweet story. How nice of him to ask you on a date…even if you were paying. So sweet!

How nice that you got to go on a date with your little guy! I love when I can spend quality time with my kids and watch them as they tell me story after story.

Thanks, Terra! We had a great time. I’m thinking we need to do this more often while I am off work this summer.
