Being a good steward of money is definitely one of the hopes I have for my son. We’ve started implementing a money management plan that is age-appropriate for him to teach him that money is earned (in his case, chores) and money is saved, spent, and tithed. Our goal is to help him to learn to be financially savvy and independent by the time he reaches adulthood.
Because it’s so important to teach children about saving and spending, T. Rowe Price has partnered with Disney to create The Great Piggy Bank Adventure , an online game and interactive experience at INNOVENTIONS at Epcot® at the Walt Disney World®. It is their hope that this will be a teaching tool for parents to use to talk with their children about good financial habits.

Our children are older now; we talked with them all the time about money when they were little. We helped them make goals for their money and then helped them track their savings over time until they met their goal. We had a ” family bank book” for them and would give them “interest” to encourage their savings. When we went to a store with toys, we discussed how we were just looking ” for future reference” so they would not expect to get something each time we were in a store. We would compare and contrast buying a cheap toy that would break almost immediately versus saving to get an item they really wanted and would use for a long time. It worked!

Over the years, I have talked to my kids about money every chance I have. We just went and set up an account for my younger son this week at the bank. I think that kids learn so much by watching what we do and it is important that they understand how to handle money.
Emily says
We discuss how we have a budget, and how if we want to buy a toy, fast food, etc that isn’t in the budget, we have to take money away from something else. We also give allowance so that they can learn to manage their own money somewhat.

We have talked to our boys about money since they were able to understand the concept of making a purchase. For our oldest he earned some spending money to take to Disney World. He was able to buy something he wanted with the money he received. He quickly saw how it does not go too far. Thanks for the opportunity.

I’m VERY vocal to my children about money. I tell them to use cash. I tell them not to use corrupt banking systems/institutions. I tell them to save every cent they can. I tell them to NEVER get credit cards. I tell them to buy gold and silver when they’re older. I tell them about what the unconstitutional federal reserve is doing to our country. I don’t mince words. I think it’s VERY important my kids are aware of what is going on with the economic situation of our country and to get prepared for it for when they are older.
When we go to the store, I show them how to find the best bang for their buck. I try to stress to them to buy what they really need not what they really want. I’m trying to raise frugal Franny’s LOL

I teach my daughter about money at the store. I tell her we need to pay for things before we can take them home. I also have her set up with a piggy bank so she can save money to buy something in the future.

We talk about it at the store when we see a sale sign. We work out what 20% off is or things like that so they know if they are getting a good deal for their money or not.

My 17 year old daughter has a part-time job and has had it for over a year now. It not only teaches her that she needs to spend her money wisely, it also teaches her how to work for it. My other kids are taught about money by going grocery shopping with me and looking for sales, using coupons, and deciding what’s the best value for a dollar. They help clean house also for extra spending money. Thanks.

I do talk to my daughter about money when out shopping, like at the grocery store. Whenever their isn’t someone behind us at a store, I usually hand her money, she counts it out, and hands it to the cashier just so she knows that we actually have to pay for everything we buy.

My kids are all older now, the youngest is 15. I must have done something right because the oldest one is married and very financially responsible. The 2 left at home are downright “frugal” and I love watching them make a decision about spending money; weighing the options of value vs. cost. It’s like you can see their brains clicking away. We always talked about money at the grocery store and when buying clothing, etc. and how to get the most out of your money and not just spend it without thinking. My daughter went to the store a few weeks ago with one of her youth groups to pick up some disposable cups. The leader just grabbed some and my daughter said “hold on!” and thought they should look at the options for the best price and value. I hope they continue on with this throughout their lives. 🙂
Around here our children participate in a sort of mock-life event in the junior high as well. They have to pick a place to live, a career, transportation, etc. and make it work on their salary. It’s very interesting and an eye-opener for some kids! It helps them to plan for college and keep the prices of living in mind.
Sorry for my entry novel!!

When giving our kids their allowance, they understand that they need to put some of their money aside for their futures and for saving for items that they may want. We usually encourage them to put 1/3 in their savings account, 1/3 saved for games, etc and 1/3 they can spend.
Thanks so much.
