These ten elementary reading fair projects that won our school reading fair this past year are worthy of a post. I’ve meant to share these for months, and it slipped my mind. I finally remembered because it’s reading fair time! It seems unreal that a year has almost come and gone and that it’s time for the kids to start working on their reading fair projects. Yikes! It’s a crazy time for me in the library, but I genuinely love seeing what the kids and their parents come up with each year.
In the past, when I posted reading fair projects, I received comments about how all of the projects looked like the adults did them rather than the kids. This is definitely true in some cases. However, we also include a family category where families can submit a project together. This is a huge help for parents with multiple children in school. The judges also look for some evidence that the child participated in the project. It’s important that the kids are involved and are able to tell the judges about their projects and how they helped out.
The projects below represent projects that placed 1st Honorable Mention. We had so many great entries, and when the reading fair was complete, we placed them all on the stage in the auditorium and let all of the classes come through and take a look. This allows the kids to get some inspiration and ideas for the following year. It also gets them excited about all of the possibilities!
10 Reading Fair Projects That Won
The Very Hungry Caterpillar– What a great book and every project I’ve ever seen for this has been super cute! I love the bright border and artificial leaves.
Cat’s Colors– This was a beautiful project! The colors are just fantastic, and it looks exactly like the cover of the book.
Biscuit’s Day at the Farm– I love Biscuit books. My younger students love them, too! Another beautiful reading fair board!
Goosebumps: Night of the Living Dummy– THIS project was a winner for one of our fifth graders, and the rest of the students went NUTS!! We only had one Goosebumps book in the library (this was it), and the kids were so impressed and excited that I had to order several more! Needless to say, they are constantly checked out. Kids love a good scary story!
A Home for Panda- I just loved using the cotton balls to make this panda pop! This was just extremely cute!
Family Huddle– When one of my students told me he wanted a book about football, I knew I had the perfect book for him! Family Huddle was written by Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, and Archie Manning. I teach in the town that Archie Manning grew up in, so this book was an extra special for our reading fair.
Henry’s Freedom Box– Such a great drawing of Henry for this project! This is also a fantastic book that I think all kids should read.
How Much is a Million?– More amazing artwork! The kids love this book, and I was excited to see this one place in our reading fair.
LaRue for Mayor– I love the use of the props on this reading fair board. This was another that placed high!
Silly Sadie, Silly Samuel– Loving these bright colors and this is a great example of how you don;t even have to have a lot of fancy props to make a project really pop.
